CINCINNATI - Nathan Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) broke two of his own Keating Aquatic Center records in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events, helping to lead the University of Cincinnati men's swimming and diving team to a clean sweep in the swimming events and a 189-110 victory over Miami (OH) Friday.
The women's squad dropped a 181.5-112.5 decision to the RedHawks, also at Keating.
Williams clocked 15:58.17 in the 1,650 to win the race by nearly 10 seconds and eclipsing his previous KAC record of 16:00.45, set in Feb. of 2008. He won the 500 freestyle in 4:34.86, winning the race by 11 seconds and breaking his previous record of 4:35.71, set a year ago.
Jakub Carda (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnasium) and Josh Schneider (Cincinnati, Ohio/Taylor) each won three events in the men's victory.
Carda won the 200 freestyle (1:42.44), 200 breaststroke (2:05.64), and the 200 individual medley (1:52.43) while Schneider took top honors in the 50 freestyle (20.13), 100 butterfly (50.25), and 100 freestyle (45.59).
Schneider teamed with Patryk Wakula (Zabre, Poland/Somsit), Jeremy Peter (Obernai, France/Lycee Freppel), and Matt Hays (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) to win the 400-medley relay in a pool-record time of 3:26.85.
Wakula also won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:52.17 and Peter won the 100 backstroke in 52.26.
Rob Langford (Mason, Ohio/St. Xavier) won the 100 breaststroke with a 59.53 clocking
Nick Saul (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) won the 200 backstroke, touching in at 1:54.14, just ahead of Peter, who placed second in 1:56.85.
Mark Talma (Port of Spain, Trinidad/Fatima College), Britton Van Dissel (Wilmore, Ky./Sayre School), Ryan Weitzel (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls), and Amos Yueng covered the course in 3:10.56 to place first in the 400-freestyle relay. The quartet of Saul, Andrew Birnbrich (Pataskala, Ohio/St. Charles Prep), Tim Kasberg (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Pickerington Central), and Nate Kramer (Cincinnati, Ohio/New Richmond) were second in 3:14.14.
For the women's squad, Elinore de Jong (Bussum, Netherlands/Goois Lyceum) won the 50 freestyle in 24.15 and the 100 butterfy, clocking 56.75.
Shannon McCarthy took the top spot in the 200 backstroke, clocking 2:10.10.
Erin Mullins (Huber Heights, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne), Bree Rossi (Carbondale, Ill./Carterville), and Renee DeSalle (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) swept the top three spots in the 200 IM, clocking 2:13.29, 2:16.16, and 2:18.20, respectively.
The Bearcats also swept the top-three places in the 400-freestyle relay. The team of Joanne Gribler (Vandalia, Ohio/Butler), Cassie Dorl (Madeira, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy), Allison Griffin, and Natalie Plunkett (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East) was first in 3:33.49.
Lange Gilby (Cleves, Ohio/Taylor), Amy Billow (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy), de Jong and Anna Bersani (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) was second in 3:45.31, while Tammy Smith (Akron, Ohio/Firestone), Melody Smith (Williamsburg, Ohio/Milford), Emma Misanik (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover), and Laurie Caudy (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) were third in 3:58.43.
UC returns to the pool on Jan. 30, heading to Fairborn, Ohio to take on Wright State at 5 p.m. On Jan. 31, the Bearcats swim at noon against Kentucky at the Keating Aquatic Center in their final tune up prior to the BIG EAST Championship meet. The league meet is scheduled to run from Feb. 28-21 in Indianapolis, Ind.
