IN THE STARTING BLOCKS:
The University of Cincinnati's indoor track and field team heads back to Bloomington, Ind. for the second time in three weeks to compete in the Gladstein Invitational Friday, Jan. 23 and Saturday, Jan. 24. The meet will be hosted at Gladstein Fieldhouse, with multi-events beginning at Noon (ET) on Friday.
The meet is expected to include more than 1,200 athletes. Included in the large field will be Gladstein Fieldhouse record holder in the shot put Liz Wanless of the New York Athletic Club and 2008 NCAA champion in the shot put and weight throw Cory Martin. Martin is also a Gladstein Fieldhouse record holder.
BEARCAT BITES:
· In the first meet of the season, junior Jasmine Cotten broke the school record and recorded a first-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.02 meters (19' 9"). Cotten also recorded a top-five finish in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 8.76 seconds.
· Junior Ashley Arnold both set the school record in the 600 meters at the BGSU Challenge with a time of 1:33.66. The previous record was held by Mandy McCumber, who recorded a time of 1:33.90 in 2000.
· Sophomore Natasha Burse collected 28 individual points with wins in the 60-meter dash, the 200 meters, and a second-place showing in the long jump at the Gladstein Invitational. Burse also ran the second leg on the 4x400 team that placed first.
· In the throws, senior Lisa Klotz recorded a mark of 43' 10 1/2" in the shot put, which was a BIG EAST qualifying mark.
· The Bearcats thrived in the pole vault last weekend, as all four Bearcat participants that competed in the event scored points. Freshman Mackenzie Fields won the event (11' 11 3/4"), sophomore Michelle Eby finished in second, junior Kayla Dunn tied for fifth, and junior Stefanie Ponte tied for eighth.
· In her first race as a collegian, freshman Kathy Klump won the 800 meters in a time of 2:13.33. Klump won by nearly two seconds over the next finisher.
· Head coach Susan Seaton is in his first year as head coach.
· UC finished 10th at the 2008 BIG EAST Indoor Championships, with Monica Hundley grabbing an individual title in the 60-meter hurdles.
UP NEXT:
Cincinnati travels back to State College, Pa. for the Penn State National. The Invitational begins on Friday, Jan. 30 and concludes on Saturday, Jan. 31.
