INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - University of Cincinnati swimmer Josh Schneider won his second-straight BIG EAST Championship in the 50 freestyle, leading the way for UC on day two of the 2009 BIG EAST meet at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.
Schneider took the lead at the turn and held off three University of Louisville swimmers, clocking a time of 19.38, winning by four tenths of a second over second place Kris Findorff (19.78).
"It was great to get out there and win the BIG EAST and represent Cincinnati," Schneider said. "Hopefully I can carry this momentum into the NCAA meet. I'm excited about automatically qualifying. It's a weight off my shoulder."
In the morning preliminary session, Schneider hit the NCAA 'A' standard, and set a school and meet record time of 19.17. It was the third fastest time in the NCAA this season.
The UC men's team is fourth through 14 events with a point tally of 144. Notre Dame sits first (296), trailed by Louisville (271), Pittsburgh (184.5), the Bearcats, West Virginia (136), Connecticut (144), Seton Hall (100.5), Syracuse (76), Georgetown (50), Villanova (46), and Providence (36).
The women's squad sits eighth with 81 points. Notre Dame leads (289), followed by Louisville (242.5), Pittsburgh (186.5), West Virginia (160), Rutgers (131), Connecticut (104), Syracuse (91), UC, Villanova (79), Georgetown (46), Seton Hall (38), and Providence (32).
The women's 200 freestyle relay team of Liz Hansson, Lange Gilby, Elinore de Jong, and Amy Billow set a school-record with their 1:32.46 clocking. It eclipses the previous school mark of 1:33.28 which had stood since 1998.
The men's 200-freestyle relay quartet of Schneider, Patryk Wakula, Jeremy Peter, and Matt Hays just missed a school-record cut with their time of 1:20.98. The current UC mark is 1:20.58. The Bearcats also narrowly missed an NCAA 'B' time of 1:20.40.
Jeremy Peter took fourth in the 200 IM, clocking 1:47.03, a season best. Jakub Carda placed eighth with a time of 1:50.62. Carda was just off his season-best time of 1:50.03, set in the preliminaries.
Nathan Williams was third in the consolation final of the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:28.30. Nate Kramer placed eighth in the same heat with a time of 4:34.48.
Gilby had a season-best time of 23.25 to place third in the women's 50 freestyle consolation finals. De Jong placed eighth in that heat with a 23.83 clocking.
Kirtley Krombholz picked up a seventh-place finish in the women's 1-meter diving event. She had a six-dive total of 211.35.
The meet, which runs through Feb. 21, continues Friday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. Finals are set to begin at 6 p.m. Only swimmers who met the conference standards qualified for competition in Indianapolis.
