The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team announced its postseason awards Monday, on the heels of a fifth-place finish for the men and an eighth-place showing for the women at the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championship at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.
Josh Schneider, who was named BIG EAST Most Outstanding Men's Swimmer after winning three individual titles and setting three BIG EAST records at the champinship meet, was named the winner of the men's Ann & Clem Buenger Most Valuable awards, as well as the team's Championship Performance Award.
Schneider won the 100-yard freestyle in a school- and meet record time of 43.08. He bettered his previous record mark of 43.14, set in preliminary action Saturday morning. His finals time also was an NCAA 'B' cut.
Schneider had previously set earned a pair of BIG EAST individual crowns as well as setting UC and meet records in the 100 butterfly, and 50 freestyle. His 50 freestyle time was under the NCAA 'A' standard and his 100 butterfly met the NCAA 'B' cut. He also swam the freestyle leg on UC's 400-medley relay team that set a school record and met the NCAA 'B' time cut Friday.
The NCAA Championship rules state that once a swimmer is selected for the championship, they are permitted to compete in other individual events that the swimmer has made consideration times in (up to a maximum of three individual events). Due to already achieving the 'A' automatic standard, Schneider will be competing in the 50 Free, 100 Fly, and 100 Free at the NCAA Championships at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas from March 26-28, 2009.
Rob Langford earned the CATapult Leadership Award, Matt Hays was named Rookie of the Year, and Jeremy Peter was named Most Improved.
Jakub Carda was one of three BIG EAST Scholar Award recipients, and was recognized at the BIG EAST Championship meet for his academic success.
The men's team added 28 times to the UC all-time top ten list, with 25 of those times set at the conference championship meet.
Elinore de Jong, who tallied a pair of NCAA 'B' times in the 100 freestyle, and 100 butterfly, as well as a school record in the 100 freestyle, took home the women's Ann & Clem Buenger Most Valuable honor, as well as the team's Championship Performance Award.
Shannon McCarthy earned the CATapult Leadership Award, Karli Kentner was named Rookie of the Year, and Lange Gilby took home the Most Improved honor.
The women's squad set 26 UC all-time top-ten times, with 25 of those coming in BIG EAST Conference Championship action.
