CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati swimmer Jeremy Peter set his sixth school record of the year in the 200 breaststroke, Sunday at the Ohio State Last Ditch NCAA Qualifier at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Peter clocked a time of 1:58.78, bettering his own school record. The native of Obernai, France, was named UC's most improved swimmer following the BIG EAST Championship.
"Jeremy had an outstanding year, especially during championship season," head coach Monty Hopkins said. "Anyone who follows swimming knows how hard it is to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet and had hoped that he become one of the meet qualifiers."
Peter has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in the 200 Individual Medley. The meet is scheduled to take place March 26-28 at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
If selected, Peter would join UC swimmer Josh Schneider in the meet. Schneider automatically qualified in the 50 freestyle and will also swim the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Championship selections will be announced Wednesday night.
Through the course of the season, Peter set three individual records, the 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke, and 200 breaststroke. He was also a part of three record-setting relay squads; the 200-medley and 400-medley relay team with Rob Langford, Patryk Wakula, and Schneider, and the 400-freestyle relay record-tying squad with Schneider, Matt Hays and Stephen Cunningham.
"It takes an amazing swim simply to qualify for the NCAA meet," Hopkins added. "Given the overall quality of swimming performances this year, Jeremy's chances of making the cut for the meet are not very good. When you consider that Elinore de Jong's school record time of 53.24 in the 100 butterfly missed selection by one-tenth of a second despite being one-half a second faster than last year's selection time."
