2009 BIG EAST Baseball Opening Ceremonies/Home Run Derby Cancelled

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After an impressive performance in the final weekend of the regular-season, which included driving in a game-winning run in Game 1 of a three-game set versus Seton Hall and scoring the winning run in the series finale to punch the University of Cincinnati's baseball team's ticket to the 2009 BIG EAST Tournament, f reshman T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.

Jones becomes the first UC player to be named BIG EAST Player of the Week this season and is just the second freshman to earn the weekly award, joining Connecticut's George Springer.

In the three-game set against Seton Hall, Jones hit .571 (8-of-14), scored five runs, and had eight hits with a double, a home run and four RBI as Cincinnati took two of three games from the Pirates to claim the final spot in the 2009 BIG EAST Championship. In addition to his game-winning RBI in the first game of the series and scoring the winning run in the series finale, Jones also hit a three-run home run in the second game of the three-game set.

For the weekend, Jones had two multi-hit games, scored two runs in two of the three games, and upped his average from .309 to .331.

Cincinnati plays its first game of the 2009 BIG EAST Championships against the No. 1 overall seed, Louisville, on Tuesday, May 19, at 2 p.m. at Bright House Networks Field in Clearwater, Fla. The contest between the Bearcats and the Cardinals is a rematch of the 2008 BIG EAST Championship game.
