FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - After finishing in the Top 13 of the 400 meters at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, University of Cincinnati junior sprinter Antione Drakeford (Columbus, Ohio/Africentric) was named a 2009 U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Outdoor Track and Field All-American, the organization announced today.
Drakeford, who set the UC 400 record earlier this season with a time of 45.83 at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational in late March, advanced from the preliminary round of the NCAA Championships to the semifinals with the seventh-best time of 46.04. In the semifinals, Drakeford fell shy of advancing to the finals by .12 seconds after clocking in at 46.00.
Drakeford becomes to the first UC men's athlete to earn All-American honors since 2004, when current assistant coach Chris Wineberg was named an All-American in the decathlon and 2008 Olympic silver medalist David Payne was an All-American in the 110 hurdles.
