CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team set five Keating Aquatic Center pool records on the way to a sweep of Wright State University, Saturday on senior day at the Keating Aquatics Center.
The women's squad topped WSU 178-120, while the men upset the favored Raiders by a 169-127 margin.
UC's 12 seniors, Elinore de Jong, Lange Gilby, Joanne Gribler, Bill Griffin, Tim Kasberg, Paul Krone, Sarah Krone, Emma Misanik, Jeremy Peter, Nick Saul, Josh Schneider, and Ryan Weitzel were honored in a pre-meet ceremony.
Schneider set a pair of pool records and won three individual events, continuing his season-long unbeaten streak in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 100 butterfly.
A crowd of UC luminaries was also on hand, including former coach Paul Steinway, Olympic Gold Medalist and UC Hall of Famer Jenny Kemp, UC Hall of Famer Billy Keating, and UCATS Order of the Black Blazer inductee Jack Drake.
Prior to the meet, UC also honored Legion of Excellence inductees de Jong and Britton Van Dissel. They were selected by head coach Monty Hopkins and his staff on the basis of GPA and academic achievement.
The women's 4x100-relay squad of Liz Hansson, Misanik, de Jong, and Gilby opened the meet up with a win, clocking 3:51.94. The quartet of Erin Frye, Stephanie Conklin, Laurie Caudy, and Bailey Laban took second place with a time of 3:57.12.
The men's quartet of Peter, Van Dissel, Schneider, and Matt Hays took top honors in the men's event, stopping the clock at 3:25.42.
Brittany Teneyck and Lindsay Bakan swept the top-two spots in both the women's 1- and 3-meter diving events. Teneyck scored 318.15 and 292.88 and the 1-and 3-meter events, respectively, while Bakan tallied 255.30 in the 1 meter and 266.25 in the 3-meter dive. Izzi Krombholz scored 253.35 to place third in the 1 meter, while Maggie Eubanks tallied 244.12 to place fourth in that event.
Stephen Cunningham won the men's 1,650 in 15:59.95 after taking the lead halfway through from teammate Nate Kramer who finished third in 16:23.74, and Melody Smith took second place in the women's 1,650 freestyle, clocking 17:48.27.
Nathan Williams led from start to finish in the men's 200 freestyle, clocking a KAC pool record 1:40.70. Kramer placed second in 1:45.99 and Cunningham took third in 1:46.31. Hansson took second place in the women's 200 freestyle at 1:52.69.
Saul led a 1-2-3 sweep of the men's 100 backstroke, earning the win in 52.66, leading Griffin in second at 53.51 and Kurt Ramer in third with a time of 54.58. Erin Frye was second in the women's 100 backstroke in 1:00.53 while Anna Bersani took third in 1:00.87.
Conklin led a UC sweep of the top-three spots in the women's 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:05.75 ahead of Misanik in second at 1:06.72 and Erin Mullins in third at 1:08.39. Peter won the men's 100 breaststroke in 57.26.
Caudy won the 200 butterfly in 2:06.97 while Brittany Grone placed third in 2:11.52. Williams won the men's event in 1:56.07 while Weitzel took second place in 1:59.56.
Gilby edged out de Jong and Berman at the wall to win the women's 50 freestyle. Gilby clocked 23.69, de Jong 23.96, and Alicia Berman 24.42.
Schneider led from the gun and set a KAC pool record with his 19.73 clocking in the 50 freestyle. He bettered his 2008 time of 19.93 in the event.
Following an intermission that included the inaugural Catsplash Fever Splashdown Contest involving members of the UC football, baseball, and diving squads, Gilby won her second event, taking first in the women's 100 freestyle in 51.45. De Jong took second place in 52.08.
Schneider won his second event, leading from start to finish in the 100 freestyle, clocking 44.68 for the victory.
Hansson claimed the top spot in the women's 200 backstroke, earning a KAC pool record with her time of 2:02.72. She broke the previous mark of 2:03.07, set in 2006 by Andrea Shoust. Frye was third in 2:14.12. Saul and Ramer went second and third in the men's 200 back, clocking 1:56.12 and 1:58.98, respectively.
Misanik earned the win in the women's 200 breaststroke, leading coast to coast, clocking 2:25.19 and holding off Wright State's Hannah Jones at the wall for the win. Jones clocked 2:25.64 and Conklin was third in 2:25.94.
Peter broke his own KAC pool record with his 2:02.87 swim in the men's 200 breaststroke. His previous mark of 2:03.30 was set in 2008.
Williams earned his second win of the day after taking the top spot in the men's 500 freestyle, covering the distance in 4:37.05.
De Jong clocked 56.02 to win the women's 100 butterfly, leading Caudy, who was second in 58.12.
Schneider won his third event and earned his second KAC pool record of the day with his time of 49.26 in the 100 butterfly. He broke the previous pool mark of 49.28, set by Pablo Marmolejo in 2007. Roberto Nevarez took second place for the Bearcats, clocking 52.10, and Bill Griffin was third in 52.55.
Grone took the top spot in the 200 IM, clocking 2:11.71 and Peter completed the UC sweep by winning the men's event in 1:52.73. Mike Whipkey placed third with his clocking of 2:00.29.
Gilby swam a strong anchor leg to maintain the wire-to-wire win for UC in the women's 400-freestyle relay. Hansson led off, followed by Anna Bersani, who gave way to Bailey Laban, and then Gilby. UC clocked 3:30.98 for the win.
Kasberg led an anchor-leg charge of his own to put the men's 400-freestyle relay squad into second place with a time of 3:10.45. The Bearcats were in third place entering the last leg, after Williams led off, followed by Hays, Nevarez, and Kasberg.
