BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Cincinnati women's indoor track and field squad had several notable performances at the Hoosier Hills Invitational.
On the women's side, sophomore Brianna Patton became the 19th athlete to qualify for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships with a seventh-place time of 8.93.
Sophomore Mackenzie Fields also continued her strong indoor campaign in the pole vault tying her personal best with a clearance of 13' 1-1/2" to finish second. Sophomore Michelle Eby added a fifth-place showing in the pole vault with a mark of 12' 5-1/2", while senior Kayla Dunn finished with an eight-place mark of 11' 5-3/4".
Competing in its final unattached exhibition of the season, sophomore Troy Cooper broke Greg Weber's record of 56' 4" with a toss of 56' 5-1/4". Cooper finished second in a talented field, while teammate Chris Littleton placed seventh with a throw of 51' 3.
Four other men's athletes posted triumphs in individual events. Sophomore Terrence Somerville recorded a win in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.00, while fellow sophomores Eric Finan and Michael Rutherford took top honors in the 3,000 meters and the 800 meters, respectively. Finan crossed the line in a school-record time of 8:13.29, shattering the record by almost seven seconds, while Rutherford clocked in at 1:52.37.
Brandon Fitch was the final winner after capturing first-place honors in the high jump with a leap of 6' 8-3/4".
The women's team heads to New York City Feb. 20-21 to compete at the 2010 BIG EAST Indoor Championships at the Armory Track.
