PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Five University of Cincinnati school records fell and the Bearcats hit two NCAA 'B' standards on day one at the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The UC men's squad is sixth after day one, while the women sit seventh. The men's team set a school record in the 800-freestyle relay while the women's team set a mark in the 200-medley relay.
The women's squad is ranked seventh with 64 points. Notre Dame leads (165), followed by Louisville (148), Pittsburgh (111), Rutgers (80), Connecticut (80), West Virginia (72), the Bearcats, Villanova (60), Georgetown (38), Seton Hall (28), and Providence (24).
The women's team placed fourth in 200-medley relay and eighth in the 800-freestyle relay.
The 200 medley team of Liz Hansson, Stephanie Conklin, Elinore de Jong, and Lange Gilby clocked an NCAA 'B' time of 1:41.67, breaking the school record of 1:43.39 set at the BIG EAST meet in 2009.
Hansson clocked a school-record time of 26.31 during her backstroke leg, eclipsing the previous mark belonging to assistant coach Randi Vogel (2006). De Jong eclipsed the school mark of Caroline Cooper (24.63/1987) in the butterfly with her leg of 23.72.
The 800 freestyle group of Bailey Laban, Laurie Caudy, Charlotte, Nilsson, and Sarah Krone clocked 7:33.13 in their race to place eighth.
The women's diving event, held earlier in the week at Trees Pool, saw Brittany Teneyck place second in the consolation finals of the 1-meter event with a total of 248.65. Lindsey Bakan was sixth (219.25) and Kirtley Krombholz placed eighth (229.60) in the consolations.
Bakan was eigth in the consolation final of the 3-meter with a total score of 216.30. Teneyck (215.05), and Krombholz (201.10) just missed making the finals.
On the men's side, UC sits in sixth with 56 points through two events. Notre Dame leads (173), followed by Pittsburgh (149), Connecticut (131), West Virginia (95), Louisville (60), UC, Villanova (46), Georgetown (44), Providence (36), and Seton Hall.
The 800-freestyle relay team of Josh Schneider, Nate Kramer, Nathan Williams, and Stephen Cunningham set an NCAA 'B' time and school record of 6:37.05 earning a fifth-place finish. The previous school record of 6:38.44 (Miller, Ornhjelm, Sundhal, L. Hart) had stood since 1987.
Schneider broke Pelle Wikstrom's 1982 200 freestyle school record of 1:36.97, after clocking 1:36.90 during his leadoff leg. His time is also an NCAA 'B' cut.
The 200 medley men's quartet of Jeremy Peter, Britton Van Dissel, Roberto Nevarez, and Matt Hays clocked 1:31.95 to place fifth, earning 28 points for the Bearcats.
Action continues Thursday with preliminaries getting underway at 10 a.m. and finals commencing at 6 p.m. Events on the schedule include: the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, and the 200-freestyle relay.
