PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team qualified eight swimmers for the Thursday night finals as day two got underway at the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Swimming & Diving Championship at Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
Josh Schneider set the standard in the morning preliminaries with a UC, BIG EAST meet, Trees Pool, and NCAA 'A' time of 19.08 in the 50 freestyle qualifying.
Schneider, the top seed entering the event. is now tied with Cal's Nathan Adrian, an Olympic Gold Medalist, for the fastest collegiate time in the nation this season.
Schneider broke his own UC and meet record time of 19.17, set a year ago. He was the only swimmer to record a time under 20 seconds in the seven heats.
It is the second-straight season he has automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship meet in the 50 freestyle. He has also met the NCAA 'B' standard in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Matt Hays qualified for the B final in the same event with a time of 21.01.
Roberto Nevarez was 27th in the prelims with a time of 21.48, Tim Kasberg was in 30th with his time of 21.68, Britton Van Dissel took 38th after clocking 22.08, and Daniel Oldham was in 40th with his effort of 22.18.
A pair of women's swimmers, Lange Gilby and Elinore de Jong qualified for the A final in the 50 freestyle. Gilby clocked a personal-best 23.07 to earn the No. 5 seed while de Jong timed in at 23.23, also a personal best, in the No. 7 slot.
Alicia Berman placed 23rd in the prelims with her time of 24.02, Bailey Laban was 24th with a clocking of 24.04, Laurie Caudy was 31st with a mark of 24.35, Erin Frye placed 42nd with her effort of 25.04, and Emma Misanik was in 45th with her time of 25.33.
Jeremy Peter hit the NCAA 'B' standard in the 200 individual medley prelims, clocking 1:49.17 to win his heat and earn the No. 4 seed in the Thursday night finals.
Ryan Weitzel (1:55.39), Mike Whipkey (1:56.30), Kurt Ramer (1:59.62) placed 23rd, 29th, and 36th, respectively, setting personal best times.
Brittany Grone had the top effort for the women in 200 IM, placing 22nd with her time of 2:07.80. Erin Mullins was 33rd after clocking 2:11.72. Both set personal best times in the event.
Nathan Williams just missed the A final in the 500 freestyle, clocking 4:29.81 to earn the top seed in the B final. Stephen Cunningham (4:31.89) earned the No. 6 spot in the B final while Nate Kramer (4:31.99) will be the No. 7 seed in the B final Thursday night. Paul Krone finished in 25th with his time of 4:37.98.
Melody Smith placed 18th in the women's 500 freestyle prelims with a time of 4:58.29, Bree Rossi was 29th with a time of 5:04.64, and Sarah Krone and Charlotte Nilsson placed 34th and 35th with times of 5:06.64 and 5:06.76, respectively. All set personal best times.
Finals are set to begin at 6 p.m. at Trees Pool. The Bearcats will also swim in the 200 freestyle relay Thursday night.
