PITTSBURGH, Pa. - University of Cincinnati swimmers Josh Schneider and Elinore de Jong both earned spots in the A final of the 100 butterfly event and eight UC swimmers earned finals spots as day three preliminaries got underway at the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championship at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh.
Schneider earned his second Trees Pool record of the meet after swimming a season-best 47.00 in the 100 butterfly to earn the top seed for the evening finals. Roberto Nevarez was 19th in the preliminaries (50.67), followed by Ryan Weitzel in 20th (51.32), Bill Griffin in 21st (51.37), and Daniel Oldham (52.45) in 29th.
On Thursday, Schneider set a Trees Pool, BIG EAST meet, and UC record with his 19.08 clocking during the 50 freestyle preliminaries. It tied for the fastest time in the country this season. Schneider went on to win his fifth individual league title, and third straight in the 50 freestyle, during the evening finals.
De Jong hit the NCAA B standard in the women's 100 butterfly, clocking a 54.23 to earn the No. 3 seed in the A final Friday night. Laurie Caudy was 21st with her time of 56.70, Alicia Berman was 44th (59.85), and Renee DeSalle (59.89) was 45th.
Jeremy Peter qualified for the B final in the men's 400 individual medley. The senior swam 3:59.19 to earn the No. 2 seed. Mike Whipkey clocked 4:09.83 to finish 21st.
Melody Smith was 19th in the preliminaries of the women's 400 IM, clocking 4:29.93, and Brittany Grone was 21st in 4:32.35.
Nate Kramer and Matt Hays both qualified for the B final in the men's 200 freestyle. Kramer earned the No. 5 seed with a time of 1:40.21 and Hays is the No. 8 seed with his effort of 1:41.01. Stephen Cunningham was 18th, clocking 1:41.96, just missing a spot in the B final. Nathan Williams timed in 24th with a clocking of 1:43.56, Nick Saul placed 28th (1:44.05), Paul Krone was in 32nd (1:44.56), Tim Kasberg placed 37th (1:46.03), and Amos Yeung was 43rd (1:48.93).
Liz Hansson grabbed the last spot in the B final of the women's 200 freestyle. She clocked 1:51.80, edging out teammate Bailey Laban who placed 17th in the prelims with her time of 1:51.90. Charlotte Nillson was 25th after clocking 1:53.24, Bree Rossi was 31st with a time of 1:54.69, and Sarah Krone was 34th with a swim of 1:54.79.
Stephanie Conklin qualified fourth in the B final of the 100 breaststroke, clocking 1:04.21. Emma Misanik was 23rd in 1:06.68, Erin Mullins was 24th with a time of 1:07.16, DeSalle was 28th with an effort of 1:08.20.
Britton Van Dissel just missed qualifying for the B final of the 100 breaststroke. He clocked 57.93 to place 17th in the preliminary round. Ethan McNeil placed 24th (59.37).
Nick Saul had a time of 51.61 in the 100 backstroke to earn the No. 5 seed in the B final. Griffin was in 21st with his effort of 53.23, and Kurt Ramer placed 24th (53.36).
Erin Frye had a swim of 57.45 in the women's 100 backstroke, placing 18th and just missing qualifying for the B final. Hansson was on her heels in 1th (57.73), and Anna Bersani was in 23rd (58.10).
Finals are set to get underway at 6 p.m. at Trees Pool. Also on the Friday evening schedule is the 400-medley relay.
