CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end Saturday as the Bearcats dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the University of Toledo, Saturday at Marge Schott Stadium.
UC fell 15-2 in game one and 2-1 in game two, dropping the Bearcats to 10-6 on the season while the Rockets improved to 9-7.
In game one, UT finished with 15 runs on 19 hits while UC tallied a pair of runs on three hits and five errors. Jason Edwards was 5-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored. Jared Hoynig was 4-for-6 with three home runs four RBI and four runs scored.
UT jumped on the board early scoring four runs in the first. The Rockets added a single run in the third, three in the sixth, two in the eighth, and five in the ninth.
UC's two runs came off a Kevin Johnson two-run home run in the seventh. The first baseman finished with a pair of RBI on the night.
Lincoln Rassi got the win for Toledo. He went 7.2 innings, scattering three hits and two earned runs while striking out four and walking three. Tyler Smith took the loss for UC, lasting 2.1 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking one.
Game two featured Toledo's Joe Corfman scoring in the top of the ninth after a leadoff single. Sherwood singled through the right side to advance Corfmann to third. Dan Sherwood later stole second and after UC reliever Brian Sand struckout Jim Vahalik, Matt Delewski was intentionally walked. Edwards sent a sacrifice fly to left field to score the game-winning run.
In the Bearcats half of the ninth, pinch hitter Justin Riddell singled to center field and advanced to second on a Jimmy Jacqout walk. Jamel Scott grounded into a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.
A quartet of UT pitchers scattered one run and four UC hits. Mikel Huston was 2-for-4, and Chris Peters and Justin Riddell picked up UC's other hits. Logan Jackson plated the Bearcats lone run in the fifth.
UC returns to action this week with games at Butler (March 23/3 p.m.) and at Dayton (March 24/3 p.m.). The Bearcats will open up BIG EAST Conference play next weekend, heading to Villanova for a three-game set from March 26-28.
