PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - Villanova University's Kyle Helisek went 8.0 innings and held the University of Cincinnati baseball team to three hits as the Wildcats defeated the Bearcats, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth.
Senior Tyler Smith put together a solid outing giving up just four hits and one unearned run in 6.0 innings of work, but Smith took the loss dropping to 1-3 on the season.
Smith found himself in a jam early as Villanova loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning. Smith bounced back to retire the next two batters putting UC just one out away from getting out of the jam, but a hit batter during the next at-bat plated the first run for the Wildcats. After the setback, UC's senior captain retired Villanova's top hitter, Matt Szczur, on a ground out to end the threat.
UC's best scoring opportunity came in the third inning when senior Jamel Scott led off the inning with a double to left-center field, but the next three batters were retired to end that scoring threat and the following 12 Cincinnati batters were set down, keeping the score at 1-0 through seven innings.
The Bearcats' next best opportunity came in the eighth inning, but UC stranded a runner on second base. In the bottom half of the inning, Villanova tacked on some insurance runs on a two-RBI single by Szczur, widening the Wildcats lead to three runs, 3-0.
In the Bearcats ninth, senior Jimmy Jacquot tried to start a rally with a one-out single to center field, but back-to-back strikeouts closed out the 3-0 loss.
Jacquot led UC at the plate with two hits in four at-bats.
The Bearcats and Wildcats play the final game of their three-game set on Sunday, March 28, at 12:15 p.m.
