THE MATCH-UP
The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team seeks its first win over in-state rival Ohio State on Wednesday, April 14, at 5 p.m. in Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats, now 4-6 on the season, will play the Buckeyes for the third time in three years. Ohio State, ranked No. 19, is 7-4 overall. Cincinnati will look to snap a three-game losing skid while Ohio State is coming off a 19-8 loss to No. 10 Vanderbilt.
LAST TIME OUT
Laura Simanski scored three goals for the second straight game but UC was unable to stop No. 14 Georgetown. Ali Mattingly scored UC's first goal of the game on an assist from Katie Liberatore with 25:19 on the clock. Georgetown added three more scores to its four goals before Simanski put the Bearcats' second goal on the board. Simanski, MacKenzie Parsons, and Rachel Mercier scored UC's final three goals of the first half in the last seven minutes, but the Hoyas took a 14-5 lead into the locker room. Georgetown scored the first four goals of the second half when Liberatore took a pass from Simanski with 17:01 remaining. Simanski and Mercier scored UC's final two goals of the game but the Hoyas tacked on three more goals making the final score 21-8. Katherine Russo had eight saves in goal for the Bearcats, who won the draw control battle, 17-14. Georgetown had 33 fouls to Cincinnati's 19 and took 33 shots compared to UC's 18.
VS. OPPONENTS
Cincinnati has more draw controls on the season than its opponents, controlling 114 to its opponent's 107. The Bearcats have a 42.9 shot percentage, compared to 40.6 shot percentage by their opponents.
STREAKIN'
Sophomore Laura Simanski has the team's longest point-streak, 13. Simanski recorded a point in every game her freshman year until the Bearcats played Loyola. She started her streak with two goals against Louisville last season and has a point in every 2010 game. Freshmen Katie Kiriazoglou and Katie Liberatore each had a point a game this season until UC's loss at No. 9 Stanford. University of Cincinnati lacrosse coach Lellie Swords is extending an invitation to local lacrosse teams of any age to participate in Girls Lacrosse Day by attending Sunday's (April 18) game against Jacksonville University at 2 p.m. in Nippert Stadium.
GIRLS LAX DAY
All female lacrosse teams in the Cincinnati area, of any age, are invited. Admission is free for all UC home lacrosse games. After the game UC players will be available for autographs. UC lacrosse players will come to a game to cheer on the team which brings the most players on their team to the game.
CAS SCHOLAR ATHLETE
Senior Patty Kelly was named the College of Applied Science Scholar Athlete of the Month for the month of March. Kelly, a tri-captain, has a 3.60 grade point average in electronic media.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Katherine Russo was named the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week after her outstanding performances in the first two games of the season for the Bearcats. Russo's honor is the second time that a Cincinnati player has earned a weekly conference honor after the first week of play in a season. Last season, Laura Simanski was named the BIG EAST's Offensive Player of the Week after the opening week of play for the Bearcats.
BIG EAST HONOR ROLL
Laura Simanski totaled 12 points, including 11 goals in a 2-1 road trip; had five points, including four goals in a 12-7 win at St. Mary's (Calif.) and earned BIG EAST Honor Roll plaudit. Katie Kiriazoglou recorded a school-record eight points and a school-record five assists in UC's victory over Presbyterian and earned BIG EAST Honor Roll status as a result. Katie Liberatore was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll after the first week of play this season. She finished the week with seven points, including five goals against Duquesne.
MISSING MARSHALL
The Bearcats lost one starter from the 2009 season, senior Lindsey Marshall. Marshall finished her career as the school leader in career goals (64), career caused turnovers (39), career ground balls (59) and career points (69).
KELLY KELLY
Senior Patty Kelly is one of the 2010 team captains and her sister, junior Lauren Kelly, became the school leader in career ground balls in UC's win over Presbyterian. She now has 61 career ground balls, passing Lindsey Marshall's previous record of 59 ground balls. She needs to cause nine turnovers to become the school leader in career caused turnovers.
SMOOTH SIMANSKI
Sophomore attack Laura Simanski became the school's leader in career goals against Saint Mary's. She has 26 goals in 2010 and 73 career goals, passing Lindsey Marshall's previous record of 64 career goals. She leads the team with 29 points on the year and has the team's most draw controls with 19.
DROPPIN' DIMES
Freshman attack Katie Kiriazoglou has twice handed out five assists in a game — a UC record — and has a team-high 17 assists through nine games. She is the school leader in career assists, passing the previous school record of 11, against Fresno State.
FAB FRESHMAN
Freshman attack Katie Liberatore is second on the team with 16 goals and has recorded 26 points so far this season.
STAR SHINING
Junior Natalie Starvaggi recorded three unassisted goals against Louisville and has 10 goals and seven assists on the year. The tri-captain has a team-high 27 ground balls this season.
MAC ATTACK
Sophomore MacKenzie Parsons has scored six times this season and has picked up 17 ground balls and caused a team-high 10 turnovers.
ALI
Sophomore attack Ali Mattingly, the tallest player on UC's squad, has 14 draw controls. She has scored five goals on seven shots and has handed out three assists.
