PROVIDENCE, R.I. - On the final weekend of the regular season, senior Jimmy Jacquot led the University of Cincinnati baseball team to a three-game sweep over Georgetown and helped the Bearcats clinch the No. 7 seed in the upcoming 2010 BIG EAST Baseball Championships en route to being named BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced today.
Jacquot hit .600 against the Hoyas with four of his six hits going for extra bases. In the ninth inning of Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader, Jacquot hit a game-tying, three-run home run, his team-leading 13th round-tripper of the season, and went 3-for-3 with three RBI. On the weekend, he tallied five RBI, scored five runs, and posted a slugging percentage of 1.200, and an on-base percentage of .714.
The honor is Jacquot's first Player of the Week distinction and UC's first Player of the Week selection this season. Freshman Andrew Strenge was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on May 17. Jacquot's weekly honor also marked UC's first Player of the Week selection since sophomore T.J. Jones captured the honor during the final week of the 2009 regular season.
When the BIG EAST Baseball Championships kick off with the opening ceremonies and the inaugural Home Run Derby on Tuesday, May 25, Jacquot will represent UC in the hitting contest.
The conference championships will be played at Bright House Networks Field from May 26-30, the Spring Training home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
UC opens tournament play on Wednesday, May 26, at 1 p.m. against No. 2 seed Connecticut, who is ranked No. 19 in both the Baseball America and USA Today Coaches' Poll. The Bearcats and Huskies met earlier this season in Storrs, Conn., and UConn took two-of-three games from UC.
All tournament games can be viewed on BIGEAST.tv through www.bigeast.org, for $12.95. Coverage of the opening ceremonies and the Home Run Derby will be free on BIGEAST.tv.
