STORRS, Conn. - The University of Cincinnati jumped in front 1-0 after the first inning, but the No.20 University of Connecticut Huskies scored at least one run in innings two through seven to defeat the Bearcats, 14-2, in the opener of a Saturday doubleheader at J.O. Christian Field.
The loss snapped Cincinnati's five-game winning streak over Connecticut and dropped UC to 24-22 overall and 8-11 in BIG EAST play, while UConn improved to 36-9 overall and 15-3 in league action.
Senior Jamel Scott got Cincinnati off to a great start in the opening inning lining a one ball, one strike pitch into left-center field for a double, his fifth of the season. Scott moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by junior Chris Peters, and after a walk to sophomore T.J. Jones, senior Jimmy Jacquot brought home Scott on a sacrifice fly to right field, giving UC a 1-0 lead.
After being retired in order in the first inning, Connecticut scored four runs with two outs in the second inning, which included a two-run home run by Joe Pavone and RBI doubles from John Andreoli and Pierre LePage, to take a 4-1 lead.
Mike Olt upped the Huskies lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run, his team-leading 15th of the season.
UConn continued to extend its lead in the fourth inning as a one-out, RBI double by Pierre LePage moved Connecticut's lead to five runs, 6-1, before two more runs in the sixth increased the lead to 8-1 through five innings.
Junior Justin Riddell got UC's second run in the sixth as he led off with a long solo home run to left field, cutting the Bearcats deficit to 8-2.
Just as UC inched closer, the Huskies put a five-spot on the scoreboard in its half of the sixth inning to move their lead to 13-2.
UConn scored another run in the seventh inning on a George Springer solo home run to make the score 14-2, and UConn went on to defeat UC by that score.
Riddell and sophomore Braden Kline each collected two hits to pace the Bearcats.
The Huskies and Bearcats are set to begin the second game of their Saturday doubleheader at approximately 4:15 p.m.
