CINCINNATI - The accolades continue to come in for University of Cincinnati freshman pitcher Andrew Strenge as he earned Third-Team Freshman All-America accolades from Ping!Baseball.com, the website announced Monday evening.
Just a week ago, Strenge was one of 88 freshmen nationwide selected as a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball.
Strenge was one of just six pitchers named to the Ping!Baseball.com Freshman All-America team to finish the season with an ERA lower than 2.00. The Yardley, Pa., native completed his freshman campaign with a 1.93 ERA, yielding just 10 earned runs in 46.2 innings of work.
In 15 appearances, Strenge posted a 7-1 record, struck out 40 batters and walked just 11. In BIG EAST Conference-only play, he set the conference single-season ERA record with a 0.62 ERA, breaking Seton Hall's Chris Noonan's record of 0.81 set during the 2003 season. He finished as the league leader in conference-only play not only in ERA, but in opponents batting average (.208), hits allowed (22), runs allowed (5), earned runs allowed (2), and walks allowed (1).
In his first career start against No. 20 Connecticut on May 9, Strenge tossed a complete game, becoming UC's first freshman to toss a complete game since Dan Osterbrock in May of 2006. He followed up that performance by tossing 8.0 innings and striking out a career-high nine batters en route to a win against No. 22 Pittsburgh in his next start.
From May 1 to May 22, Strenge completed 24.2 innings without giving an earned run, which was the second-longest streak in the country without giving up an earned run.
