DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati women's swimming and diving squad won a 179-100 decision over host Wright State University, Saturday at the WSU Natatorium.
The Bearcats split the dual meet with the Raiders as the men's squad fell by a 138-123 margin. Liz Hansson, Roberto Nevarez, and Josefin Wede all were multiple event winners in UC's final tune up before the BIG EAST Conference Championships get underway.
The women's squad started off with a 3:56.21 swim to win the 400-yard medley relay. The men's quartet took second and third place in its heat with times of 3:33.19 and 3:38.72, respectively.
Liz Hansson and Katie Nemann went 1-3 in the 200-yard freestyle. Hansson was first in 1:55.27 and Nemann took third in 1:58.97. On the men's side, Stephen Cunningham took second in 1:43.67 and Nathan Williams placed third in 1:43.86. WSU's Pawel Grzebala won the race in 1:43.54.
Erin Frye grabbed second in the women's 100 backstroke with her effort of 59.25 and Anna Bersani was third in 1:01.18. On the men's side, Joe Scheerpenberg was second in 54.79 and Kurt Ramer placed third in 55.02.
Josefin Wede won the women's 100 breaststroke with a 1:06.50 clocking. Sammie Wheeler took third place in 1:07.46. Haywood Miller was second (1:00.76) and Britton Van Dissel placed third (1:01.13) in the men's heat.
Laurie Caudy swam a 2:05.49 clocking to win the women's 200 butterfly. Brittany Groene place third with a time of 2:13.96. Roberto Nevarez won the men's event with a 1:57.11 clocking while Nathan Spruill took third with a time of 2:04.61.
Bailey Laban and Weronika Wasiakowska took second and third place in the women's 50 freestyle with times of 25.10 and 25.19, respectively. Both were just of Rasa Zilinskaite's winning time of 25.09. Matt Hays took third in the men's race with his effort of 22.36.
Kirtley Krombholz, Lindsay Bakan, and Brittany Teneyck finished 1-2-3 in the women's 3-meter diving event. Krombholz took top honors with 299.93 points, Bakan was second with 278.48 and Teneyck third with 273.60.
Wasiakowska and Laban swept the top-2 spots in the women's 100 freestyle with times of 53.78 and 53.98, respectively. Rob Walsh was third in the men's event with his clocking of 49.41.
Hansson won the 200 backstroke with her clocking of 2:04.57. Frye placed third with a time of 2:10.73. Ramer, Scherpenberg, and Brandon Metzler led a 1-2-3 sweep of the men's 200 backstroke. Ramer took the win in 1:57.97, Scherpenberg was second in 1:58.89, and Metzler placed third in 2:02.68.
Victoria Jacumski and Wheeler placed 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke event, clocking times of 2:27.26 and 2:28.48, respectively. Miller and Van Dissel placed 2-3 in the men's event with their efforts of 2:12.13 and 2:13.86, respectively.
Melody Smith placed second in 5:14.89 and Nemann was third in 5:19.49 in the women's 500 freestyle event. Cunningham swam 4:42.36 to win the men's 500 freestyle and Williams placed third with a time of 4:50.58.
Caudy was out-touched at the wire in the women's 100 butterfly, clocking a time of 57.77, just off Zilinskaite's first-place effort of 57.27. Nevarez won the men's race with his time of 51.85.
Teneyck tallied a total of 287.70 points to win the 1-meter diving competition. Bakan was third with 260.85 points and Krombholz took fourth with 250.95 points.
Wede won the women's 400 IM by 10 seconds with her effort of 4:27.51. Groene placed third with a time of 4:42.41. Miller took the top spot in the men's 400 IM by eight seconds with his swim of 4:11.31. Mike Whipkey placed third with his time of 4:23.69.
The women's 400-freestyle relay squad won its head in 3:32.59 while the men's quartet was second with a time of 3:11.54.
The Bearcats return to the pool at the BIG EAST Conference Championships at Louisville. The diving event is set to take place from Feb. 11-13 while the swimming events will occur from Feb. 16-19.
