LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati swimming team kicked off the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Championships with a pair of relay races at the Ralph Wright Natatorium Wednesday.
The only events on tap in the opening session were the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay. The meet will continue Thursday and run through Saturday evening in Louisville.
The women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Liz Hansson, Bree Rossi, Laurie Caudy, and Bailey Laban led off the meet for the Bearcats with an eighth-place finish and a time of 7:30.06.
The quartet's relay time was the seventh fastest in UC history while Hansson's leadoff leg of 1:49.95 sets the school record for the 200 freestyle.
The men's group of Nathan Williams, Stephen Cunningham, Nate Kramer, and Seth Poitinger clocked a 6:46.51, placing them seventh in the men's 800 free relay.
Erin Frye, Stephanie Conklin, Kinsey Kowalski, and Weronika Wasiakowska teamed together for a 1:44.54 effort in the women's 200-yard medley relay.
That time is the sixth-fastest in school history while Frye clocked the No. 3 record time in 50 backstroke (26.64), Conklin set the No. 4 time in the 50 breaststroke (29.23), and Kowalski hit the No. 5 time in the 50 butterfly (25.08).
The men's quartet of Brandon Metzler, Haywood Miller, Roberto Nevarez, and Matt Hays clocked 1:32.82 to place seventh in its race.
Metzler's leadoff leg of 24:08 cracked the all-time top-10 times in the 50-yard backstroke.
Action continues Thursday in Louisville with the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, and the 200 freestyle relay in the evening session.
