LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Cincinnati swimmer Liz Hansson won the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Championship in the 50-yard freestyle to wrap up day two of the league championship meet, Thursday at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.
Hansson won her first individual BIG EAST crown, setting a school record and NCAA B time of 22.93. She broke her own school record, which was set in the morning preliminary action.
The women's team sits fifth after day two with 152 points. Host Louisville leads with 328.5 points. Notre Dame is second (217.5), followed by Pittsburgh (192.5), West Virginia (165), the Bearcats, Rutgers (144), Villanova (139.5), Connecticut (126), Georgetown (65), Seton Hall (47), and Providence (26).
Through 18 events on the men's side, UC ranks seventh with 86 points. Louisville holds the top spot with 346 points. Notre Dame sits second (326.5) followed by Pittsburgh (237), West Virginia (202), Connecticut (109.5), Seton Hall (93), the Bearcats, Georgetown (78), Villanova (58), and Providence (43).
Stephen Cunningham took sixth place in the men's 500-yard freestyle with his time of 4:26.65, the fifth-fastest time in school history.
Josefin Wede and Sammie Wheeler placed 6-7 in the Championship Final of the women's 200 individual medley. Wede clocked the second-fastest time in school history with her effort of 2:03.30 while Wheeler timed in on her heels at 2:03.31, the third-fastest time in the UC record book.
Brittany Groene placed eighth in the consolation final of the 200 IM with her time of 2:06.40.
The women's 200-freestyle relay team of Hansson, Weronika Wasiakowska, Alicia Berman, and Bree Rossi scored a fourth-place finish with their time of 1:33.70, the sixth-fastest clocking in school history.
The men's relay squad of Matt Hays, Roberto Nevarez, Seth Poitinger, and Daniel Oldham clocked a time of 1:23.08, placing them sixth in the event.
Action continues at 10 a.m. Friday in Louisville with the prelims of the 400-yard IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and in the evening, the finals of the 400-medley relay.
