LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Two University of Cincinnati swimmers qualified for A finals as action got underway on the final day of competition at the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Championships, Saturday at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.

Liz Hansson earned the No. 4 spot in the A final of the women's 200-yard backstroke, swimming a time of 1:59.42. Amanda Hardewig will swim in the B final after clocking 2:03.94 to place 16th overall in the prelims. Anna Bersani took 17th with a time of 2:04.51.

Joe Scherpenberg placed 17th in the prelims of the men's 200 backstroke with his time of 1:51.84. Kurt Ramer placed 22nd (1:53.69), and Brandon Metzler was 27th (1:56.80).

Bailey Laban and Weronika Wasiakowska will both swim in the B final of the women's 100 freestyle after clocking times of 51.80 and 51.98, respectively to place 12th and 15th.

Kinsey Kowalski placed 18th in the prelims with her time of 52.38, Bree Rossi was 21st after swimming 52.75, and Alicia Berman finished 27th with 53.41 clocking.

Roberto Nevarez took 18th in the men's 100 freestyle with his swim of 45.77 in the prelims. Seth Poitinger placed 30th (46.93), Matt Hays was in 31st (47.10), Daniel Oldham took 33rd (47.33), Christopher Hale placed 34th (47.49), and Robert Walsh finished 43rd (48.31).

Josefin Wede placed eighth in the 200 breaststroke preliminaries, swimming a time of 2:16.10 and qualifying for the A final Saturday night.

Stephanie Conklin and Victoria Jacumski both qualified for the B final in the 200 breast. Conklin was 14th overall with a 2:18.65 while Jacumski was in 15th with a time of 2:19.07. Sammie Wheeler placed 20th with her time of 2:20.59.

Haywood Miller grabbed the 17th spot in the men's 200 breaststroke with his effort of 2:06.48. Britton Van Dissel placed 19th (2:06.99), Matt Hargrove took 24th (2:09.88), and Mike Whipkey placed 26th (2:10.85).

Laurie Caudy swam 2:02.92 in the 200 butterfly, the eighth best time in school history, placing ninth in the prelims and qualifying for the B final. Brittany Groene placed 18th with her time of 2:06.30.

Nathan Spruill placed 31st in the men's 200 butterfly with his season best time of 1:59.47.

The meet will close out tonight at 6 p.m. ET with the 200-yard backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1,650 freestyle, and the 400-freestyle relay. Live results and a free live stream of the events are available at www.BIGEAST.org.
