ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of Cincinnati junior hurdler Terrence Somerville finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles on Sunday at the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships.

Somerville (Akron, Ohio/Buchtel) recorded a time of 7.63, which is now the top NCAA mark in 2011. He is within one-tenth of a second from breaking UC hall-of-famer David Payne's 7.62 mark, the Cincinnati record.

"For junior Terrence Somerville to now rank first in the NCAA standings, one hundredth off David Payne's UC record, is a testimony to his ability and drive" UC head coach Bill Schnier said. "He will have to wait until June to get his just reward in the world of the NCAA but his time will come."

Entering the weekend, Somerville's top mark of 7.68 was tied with University of Texas' Keiron Stewart.

Somerville, however, was not the only Bearcat to participate at the USA Indoor T&F Championships.

UC graduates Antione Drakeford (2010), Mary Wineberg (2002) and Lewis Johnson (1987) each had their own role at the meet.

Drakeford competed in the 400-meter dash. After finishing the preliminary round in sixth place with a time of 47.42, Drakeford improved his time to 47.27 to place fifth.

Olympic gold medalist Wineberg competed in the women's 400-meter dash where she placed third in the finals with a time of 52.56.

"The USATF Nationals is for post-collegians so for three Bearcats or former Bearcats to place in the top six against that seasoned competition is huge," said Schnier.

Johnson served as an announcer for ESPN during the live telecast of Sunday's championship events.
