CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team handed out its postseason hardware at the Bearcats' annual end-of-season banquet, on March 27, 2011 at the Tangeman University Center.
Senior Shareese Ulis (Toledo, Ohio/Trinity Valley Community College) earned most valuable player recognition. Ulis started 29 games and led the Bearcats in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per contest. She tied for the team lead by dishing out 80 assists and had a team high 29 steals. She hit a team-high 133 field goals, including a UC best 75 three pointers.
The Bearcat Pride Award, recognizing leadership on and off the court, was awarded to senior Shelly Bellman (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf High School). Bellman, a sixth-year senior, missed two full seasons with knee injuries during her UC career. She was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA and made the most of her final year, starting 24 games and averaging 5.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per contest. She was named the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Sportsmanship Award recipient for the 2010-11 campaign.
The most improved player honor went to Jeanise Randolph (Calumet City, Ill./Thornton Fractional North High School). Randolph, who was named the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team, shot a team-high 53 percent and averaged 5.7 points per game and also hauled in 5.6 rebounds per game, good enough for second most on the team among players who played in at least 20 games.
The Bearcat Hustle Award was awarded to Kayla Cook (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster High School). Cook was the second-leading scorer on the team at 8.1 ppg. She started all 29 games and earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
"It was really exciting to get together one last time this year with not only our team, but the countless number of supporters of our program, which includes departmental staff, administrators, season ticket holders, donors, parents, and friends of the program, "said UC head coach Jamelle Elliott. "It gave me a chance to not only thank them but to let my staff and student-athletes - especially my two senior leaders, Shelly and Shareese - know how much I appreciated their 100 percent effort throughout the year."
