SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Kathy Klump clocked a school record in the 800 meters and earned an automatic qualifying slot in the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship Saturday, as the University of Cincinnati track squad wrapped up action at the Alex Wilson Invitational inside the Loftus Sports Center on the campus of Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind.
Klump ran 2:04.39 in the 800, breaking her own school record (2:05.47) and finishing third behind Molly Beckwith (2:02.61) and Natalja Piliusina (2:03.46). All three surpassed the NCAA automatic mark of 2:04.50. Klump's run ranks her eight in the nation this season.
Klump, a two-time 2012 BIG EAST Conference Champion, gives UC two automatic qualifiers into the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship next weekend in Boise, Idaho as Jasmin Cotten has already reached the qualifying mark in the pentathlon.
Coming off her second-place finish in the high jump Friday night, Cotten ran 9.10 in the 60 hurdles, placing 11th in the preliminaries.
Michelle Eby was sixth in the pole vault with her clearance of 3.94m (12-11.00). Eby lost a jump off on attempts with Courtney Siebenaller of Dayton for fifth place. Emily Clay and Sarah Rasnick failed to the clear the opening height of 3.79m (12-05.25). Rasnick's BIG EAST Championship winning mark of 4.22m (13-10) is tied for the 19th best effort nationally this season.
Terrence Somerville clocked 7.96 in the finals of the 60 hurdles, placing third. He had a time of 8.00 in the prelimary round, winning his heat. Somerville did not improve on his season-best clocking of 7.74 which ranks tied for ninth-best nationally.
Maurice Norman did not finish his heat in the 400 meters.
