CINCINNATI - As the summer winds down, 21 former Bearcats are hard at work in NFL training camps throughout the country in an effort to make their respective team's 53-man roster for the fall NFL season.
Of these 21 former Bearcats, seven are hopeful NFL rookies who were members of the 2011-12 BIG EAST Champion and Liberty Bowl Champion Bearcat football team.
The list is highlighted by former student-athletes Derek Wolfe (Denver Broncos, 36th overall pick) and Isaiah Pead (St. Louis Rams, 50th overall pick) who were second-round selections in the 2012 NFL Draft, as well as third-round selection John Hughes (Cleveland Browns, 87th overall pick) and fifth-round selection Adrien Robinson (New York Giants, 127th overall pick).
Former student-athletes JK Schaffer (Jacksonville Jaguars), Monte Taylor (Philadelphia Eagles) and DJ Woods (Tennessee Titans) were signed as undrafted free agents following the 2012 NFL Draft.
The first week of preseason action provided each NFL hopeful an opportunity to showcase their skills in a live NFL game.
DT Derek Wolfe (Denver Broncos) 8/09/12 at Chicago Bears - Recorded two sacks, three solo tackles, one tackle-for-loss and two quarterback hits in a 31-3 win.
RB Isaiah Pead (St. Louis Rams) 8/12/12 at Indianapolis Colts - Tallied 10 rushes for 33 yards, with a long of 11 yards. Also caught three passes for nine yards and returned a kickoff 30 yards with one lost fumble in a 38-3 loss.
DT John Hughes (Cleveland Browns) 8/10/12 at Detroit Lions - Started at defensive tackle and recorded two total tackles, including one assisted and one solo tackle, and one tackle-for-loss in a 19-17 win.
TE Adrien Robinson (New York Giants) 8/10/12 at Jacksonville Jaguars - Saw action in a 32-31 loss.
LB JK Schaffer (Jacksonville Jaguars) 8/10/12 vs. New York Giants - Registered three solo tackles in a 32-31 win.
DE Monte Taylor (Philadelphia Eagles) 8/09/12 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers - Recorded one solo tackle, one sack, one tackle-for-loss and one quarterback hit in a 24-23 win.
WR DJ Woods (Tennessee Titans) 8/11/12 at Seattle Seahawks - Recorded one special teams tackle, fair caught one punt, returned two kicks with a long return of 25 yards and was targeted once in a 27-17 loss.
Additional former Bearcats student-athletes, with NFL expereince already under their belts, were also in action this past week in an effort to make their respective squads, solidify their spot on the team and continue their preparation for the upcoming season.
WR Armon Binns (Cincinnati Bengals) 8/10/12 vs. New York Jets - Was targeted twice and came away with two receptions for 24 yards with a long of 16 yards in a 17-6 win.
P Kevin Huber (Cincinnati Bengals) 8/10/12 vs. New York Jets - Punted seven times with a 41.9 yard average with a net average of 36.6 yards and a long of 53 yards while pinning two punts inside the 20-yard line.
WR Vidal Hazelton (Cincinnati Bengals) 8/10/12 vs. New York Jets - Saw action in a 17-6 win.
WR Mardy Gilyard (Philadelphia Eagles) 8/9/12 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers - Was targeted once and hauled-in a 44-yard touchdown and returned one punt for a 14-yard gain in a 24-23 win.
C Jason Kelce (Philadelphia Eagles) 8/09/12 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers - Started the game at center and saw action in a 24-23 win.
DE Trent Cole (Philadelphia Eagles) 8/09/12 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers - Saw action in a 24-23 win.
TE Brent Celek (Philadelphia Eagles) 8/09/12 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers - Did not play due to injury.
DE Ricardo Mathews (Indianapolis Colts) 8/12/12 vs. St. Louis Rams - Started at defensive end and tallied two tackles, including one solo and one assisted tackle, in a 38-3 win.
OT Jeff Linkenbach (Indianapolis Colts) 8/12/12 vs. St. Louis Rams - Saw action in a 38-3 win.
FB Ben Guidugli (St. Louis Rams) 8/12/12 at Indianapolis Colts - Saw action in a 38-3 loss.
S Brandon Underwood (Oakland Raiders) 8/13/12 vs. Dallas Cowboys - Registered three total tackles, including one solo tackle and two assisted tackles, in a 3-0 loss.
WLB Connor Barwin (Houston Texans) 8/11/12 at Carolina Panthers - Started at weak side linebacker and tallied one solo tackle in a 26-13 win.
S Haruki Nakamura (Carolina Panthers) 8/11/12 vs. Houston Texans - Registered four total tackles, including two solo and two assisted tackles, in a 26-13 loss.
LS Mike Windt (San Diego Chargers) 8/09/12 vs. Green Bay Packers - Saw action in a 21-13 win.
