CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's basketball team used an inside attack to knock off visiting Campbell, 81-62, in the final game of the 2013 Global Sports Shootout, Wednesday inside Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats (4-0) led from wire to wire, scored 58 points in the paint and turned 23 Campbell (2-3) turnovers into 32 points.
Justin Jackson (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Arlington Country Day) turned in a career-high 19 points, along with pulling down nine rebounds, blocking a season best five shots and grabbing three steals.
With the game well in hand in the second half, Jackson went diving over press row for a loose ball, nearly taking out several writers. He returned to the court seconds later and rejoined the play, earning a nice ovation from the crowd of 6,011.
Sean Kilpatrick (Yonkers, N.Y./Notre Dame Prep) led all players with 23 points, his third 20-point game of the young season. Titus Rubles (Dallas, Texas/Blinn College) had 10 points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals while Jermaine Lawrence (Springfield Gardens, N.Y./Pope John XXIII) and Shaquille Thomas (Paterson, N.J./NIA Prep School) each added eight points.
UC jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after a pair of steals in the first 60 seconds led to a dunk and a layup on the fast break. The Bearcats fought off three ties in the first four minutes ahead of an 11-2 run over the next 4:27 that pushed the lead to 20-11 with 11:38 left in the opening stanza.
The Bearcats would not relinquish the lead from there, pushing the margin to as many as 23 in the second half, cruising to the 81-62 win.
Andrew Ryan led the Camels with 17 points after draining five triples, Darius Leonard added 16 and Reco McCarter finished with 13. Leonard's six rebounds where a team high. Quinton Ray finished with eight points, six assists and five rebounds.
UC continues a seven-game season-opening homestand on Tuesday, Nov. 26, taking on UMass Lowell at 7 p.m. ET in Fifth Third Arena. The game is scheduled to be televised on FOX Sports Ohio with radio coverage on 700 WLW AM.
