CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's basketball team ran its early-season record to 5-0 on the strength of a 79-49 win over UMass Lowell, Tuesday in non-conference action inside Fifth Third Arena.
UC (5-0) overcame an early six-point deficit to the River Hawks (0-6), but climbed to a 47-27 halftime lead. The Bearcats pushed the lead to as many as 33 in the second half, coming home with the 79-49 win.
Trailing 11-6 with 17:03 left in the opening stanza, UC used a 20-5 run over a period of almost eight minutes (7:57) to lead 26-16 with 8:46 remaining in the half. All told, Cincinnati outscored the River Hawks 41-16 over the final 17 minutes of the first half.
The second half was more of the same. The River Hawks pulled the margin down to 18 in the first minute of the second half, but were unable to overcome the stifling Cincinnati defense and a 38.1 shooting percentage from the floor (16-of-42).
The Bearcats forced UMass Lowell into 28 turnovers and converted them into 31 points. UC tallied 46 points in the paint, almost matching the River Hawks 49-point total and held a 16-4 advantage on the offensive glass, earning 14 second-chance points.
Sean Kilpatrick (Yonkers, N.Y./Notre Dame Prep) led three Bearcats in double digits with 18 points. The senior netted his 82nd career double-figure scoring game and hit for 10 or more points for the 34th time in the last 37 games.
Justin Jackson (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Arlington Country Day) had his second consecutive double-double, finishing with 13 points and a career high 12 rebounds to go along with three blocks and three steals. Ge'Lawn Guyn (Lexington, Ky./South Kent Prep) netted 10 points, just off his career high of 11 in the win. Shaquille Thomas (Paterson, N.J./NIA Prep School) dished out a career best five assists.
Chad Holley led the River Hawks with 10 points. Tyler Livingston pulled down a team-high six boards and added nine points and two steals.
Cincinnati continues a seven-game homestand to open the season this Friday, taking on Kennesaw State at 4 p.m. ET inside Fifth Third Arena. The game will be televised by FOX Sports Ohio with radio coverage on 700 WLW AM.
