CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's basketball team saw three players record a double-double in a 102-62 win over Chicago State on Monday night inside Fifth Third Arena. The win propels the Bearcats to 10-2 on the season and 9-0 in home games.
Seniors Sean Kilpatrick (Yonkers, N.Y./Notre Dame Prep) and Justin Jackson (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Arlington Country Day) and junior Jermaine Sanders (Far Rockaway, N.J./Rice) all recorded double-doubles for the Bearcats. It marked the first time three players have finished with double-doubles since Leonard Stokes, Steve Logan and Jason Maxiell all did so against Coppin State on Dec. 8, 2001.
Kilpatrick finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, Jackson had 19 points and 13 rebounds and Sanders added 14 points and 13 rebounds. Kilpatrick's 10 rebounds, Jackson's 19 points and 13 rebounds and Sanders' 14 points and 13 rebounds were all career-high marks.
A total of eight players either tied or set a new career scoring high in the contest.
Cincinnati also had seven players score in double figures for the first time since Dec. 1, 2009. Kilpatrick led the way with 21 points and Jackson tallied 19. Sanders and redshirt sophomore Shaquille Thomas (Paterson, N.J./NIA Prep) each totaled 14 points while junior Ge'Lawn Guyn (Lexington, Ky./South Kent Prep), freshman Troy Caupain (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) and freshman Kevin Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) all had 10 for the Bearcats.
The final score of 102-62 marks the 19th straight game where UC has held its opponent to under 70 points. The streak is tied for second-most in school history. The Bearcats have not allowed over 70 points in a game since a 73-66 overtime loss at Connecticut on Feb. 21, 2013.
The Bearcats crashed the boards for 69 rebounds while holding the Cougars to only 21. The +47 rebounding margin sets a new school record for UC, breaking a record dating back to the 1955-56 season. The 69 boards were also a Fifth Third Arena record.
The significant rebounding margin led to a 29-0 UC advantage on second chance points. The Bearcats also led in points in the paint (42-22), points off turnovers (17-12), and bench points (38-10). UC and CSU tied 12-12 in fast break points.
Cincinnati scored 48 points in the first half, matching the team's season high for points in a half, while also marking two straight halves where the Bearcats have scored 48 points (second half versus Middle Tennessee State on Dec. 21). The Bearcats broke that mark in the second half with 54 points against the Cougars.
The Bearcats took a solid lead midway through the first half of the game. While holding a slim 23-20 lead, the UC employed a 7-0 run to span one minute and 10 seconds. A three-point bucket by Guyn highlighted the run, while Kilpatrick and Sanders also scored two points to give Cincinnati a 30-20 lead with 7:59 remaining in the first half.
UC rode another 13-0 run to close out the half, holding CSU scoreless over six minutes and 18 seconds. Johnson and Caupain each tallied five points during the span. The run gave UC a 48-27 lead before The Cougars drained a jumper with seven second remaining in the half to end the drought and bringing the halftime score to 48-29.
Sanders paced the Bearcats in the opening half, recording his first-career double-double during the first 20 minutes. The junior had 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds before even going to the locker room at halftime. Kilpatrick led all scorers with 13 in the first half.
In addition to the scoring runs, the Bearcats took advantage of nine first-half fouls by the Cougars, sinking 10-of-12 free throws for an 83.3 percent clip.
The Bearcats used a 10-1 run in the second half to expand their lead to 55-37 with 14:08 remaining. UC slowly grew the lead even more until an 11-0 scoring run closed out the game. A Caupain three-pointer with 56 second remaining in the game put Cincinnati over the century mark and ended an explosive scoring night for the Bearcats.
Cincinnati will enjoy the holiday break before coming back to Fifth Third Arena on Sat., Dec. 28 for a matchup against Big Ten competitor Nebraska. The game has been moved to a Noon ET start on ESPN2 to allow fans to also see the UC football team's Belk Bowl match-up with North Carolina at 3:40 ET.
