CINCINNATI - It was a tale of two halves Saturday as the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team dropped a 58-47 decision to Temple, Saturday in American Athletic Conference action inside Fifth Third Arena.
Cincinnati (8-9, 1-5 American) played a strong defensive first half, leading by nine, but a cold second-half offense and turnovers allowed Temple (10-7, 4-3 American) to get back in the game and win its second in-a-row.
The Owls outscored UC 45-25 in the second stanza, shooting nearly 60 percent (17-of-30). Rateska Brown scored 15 of her game high 17 points in the final 20 minutes and Shi-Heria Shipp tallied 10 of her 13. The Bearcats were 9-of-24 (.333) in the second half and turned the ball over 22 times on the day, which the Owls converted into 25 points.
UC pushed its nine-point halftime advantage to 15 after a Kayla Cook (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) triple with 16:53 left made the score 30-15 in favor of the Bearcats. From there, Temple went on a 17-0 run over 4:27 to lead 32-30 with 12:03 left. UC went scoreless for a period of 6:34 and was 1-of-8 from the field with six turnovers over an eight-minute segment.
Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods/Michigan) led UC with 16 points and Alyesha Lovett (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X Shabazz) added 13. Jeanise Randolph (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional North) tied her career high with 14 rebounds and added three blocks, moving into fifth place on the UC career chart with 69. Lovett had a career best four blocks.
UC led 22-13 at the half, holding Temple to 4-for-23 (.170) shooting from the field. The Owls went 11:34 without a field goal and UC used a 12-1 run during that span to build its lead.
Hollins had 13 first-half points, going 5-of-7 from the field to equal Temple's scoring output. Randolph grabbed 11 rebounds in the first 20 minutes, her seventh double-digit rebounding game of the season.
Cincinnati returns to action Tuesday, taking on USF in Tampa, Fla. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET with live audio coverage available on GoBEARCATS.com.
