UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI MEN'S BASKETBALL
2013-14 POSTGAME NOTES
No. 10/11 Cincinnati (23-3, 12-1 American) 73, Houston (12-13, 4-8 American) 62
February 16, 2014 // Fifth Third Arena // Cincinnati, Ohio // Attendance: 13,176 (capacity)
Series Notes
- The game marked the 25th meeting between the Bearcats and Cougars. UC has won 24 of those contests, including all of the 12 match-ups in Cincinnati.
Team Notes
- Head coach Mick Cronin used the starting lineup of Ge'Lawn Guyn (G), Sean Kilpatrick (G), Shaquille Thomas (F), Titus Rubles (F) and Justin Jackson (F) for the 26th time in 26 games.
- Cincinnati continues its best start in eight seasons under Cronin. It is the best start for the program since the 2001-02 squad opened 26-3 en route to a 31-4 mark and school record for victories.
- The win gives UC 19-straight victories at Fifth Third Arena and a 17-0 mark at home on the season. The victory over UConn on Feb. 6 set an arena record for home wins to start a season.
- In holding Houston to 62 points, the Bearcats have now held all but two opponents under 70 points on the season.
- The Bearcats won for the first time in just four games this season where they allowed the opponent to shoot better than 50-percent from the floor.
- In winning its 23rd game of the season, the Bearcats have already eclipsed last year's win total. The 2012-13 edition went 22-11 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season. UC is just three wins shy of matching the best win total under Cronin (26 in 2010-11 and 2011-12).
- The capacity crowd of 13,176 is the first sellout at Cincinnati since Louisville visited Fifth Third on Feb. 23, 2012. It raises UC's average attendance in conference home games to 10,598.
- Cincinnati is 7-3 on Saturdays.
Individual Notes
- In taking the floor for the 132nd consecutive time as a Bearcat, Kilpatrick set a school record for consecutive games played. He passes Keith Gregor, who played in 131 straight contests from 1993-95. In addition, Kilpatrick moves into a tie for fourth in career games played with 132. He is tied with Larry Davis and Yancy Gates and trails Cashmere Wright (139 games), Dion Dixon (137) and Steve Logan (135).
- Kilpatrick also played 38 minutes to reach 4,023 for his career, becoming just the second player in UC history to eclipse 4,000 career minutes. He joins Denota Vaughn (4,310 minutes from 2007-10) in that exclusive club.
- With 28 points, Kilpatrick became just the third player in program history to score at least 500 points in three seasons. Only Oscar Robertson and Danny Fortson have previously achieved that milestone.
- Kilpatrick's 28 points give him 1,967 for his career. He stands in third place all-time trailing only Steve Logan (1,985) and Oscar Robertson (2,973).
- It marked the 14th contest with at least 20 points for Kilpatrick on the season, and 31st of his carer. He has now scored in double figures in 102 of his 132 career games.
- Kilpatrick is also third in career three-pointers, with his two today giving him 290 for his career. Only Deonta Vaughn (313) and Darnell Burton (306) have connected for more threes as a Bearcat.
- Jackson's two blocks give him 200 for his career and 82 for the season. His career total ranks fourth all-time behind Kenyon Martin (292), Erick Hicks (256) and Jason Maxiell (252). His season mark ranks sixth all-time. Hicks is the UC record holder for blocks in a season with 113 during the 2005-06 campaign.
- Rubles is now averaging 7.7 points per game over the last nine contests. During that span, he is shooting 48.9-percent from the floor.
- Jermaine Lawrence played 20 minutes, the most since returning on Feb. 6 against UConn from a toe injury. The injury was suffered in the first half at Memphis on Jan. 4. He had missed eight contests.
- Guyn has connected for at least one-three pointer in seven of the last eight games. UC is undefeated when the junior connects from beyond the arc (15-0).
- Thomas' 11 points give him double figures for the 11th time this season and fifth time in 13 conference games.
