Bearcats Fall to Iowa 5-1

EMERSON, Ga.- The University of Cincinnati baseball team was limited to just two hits and one run in a 5-1 loss to Iowa on Saturday afternoon in Emerson, Georgia, at the Perfect Game Lakepoint South Complex.

Junior Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) launched a solo homerun over the left field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning for Cincinnati's only run of the game.

//Notables
- The Bearcats drop to 1-8 with the loss while Iowa improves to 6-1 on the season.
- Freshman starting pitcher Dalton Lehnen (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) (0-3) was handed the loss and Iowa's Blake Hickman (1-0) earned the victory.
- Happ recorded a stolen base to move him into eighth on the UC career stolen bases list with 47.
- Head coach Ty Neal penciled seven freshmen into the starting lineup and has started at least four freshmen in each game this season. Freshmen Ryan Noda (Volo, Ill./Grant) and Manny Rodriguez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Calvert Hall) have started all nine games for UC. Cincinnati is the only team in the country to have started seven freshmen in a game this season.
- Happ's homerun extended his hitting streak to seven games.
- Happ was walked twice in the ballgame, in addition to the three free passes he was issued in the first game of the series.
- Lehnen tied a career high with five strikeouts on the mound.
- Freshman reliever David Orndorff (Pasadena, Calif./Pasadena Polytechnic) tied a career high with two strikeouts,
- Freshman Chris Klenk (Portage, Ind./Portage) drew two walks, tying a career high.
- Cincinnati batters struck out 13 times for the second consecutive game and have struck out at least 10 times in eight of the nine games this season.

Bottom of the First
Iowa put an early run on the board when a leadoff walk to Eric Toole came back to haunt Lehnen. With Toole on first base, a double by Jake Mangler moved him to third and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Peyton brought him home. Lehnen settled down after the run, collecting two strikeouts to end the frame and strand two runners.
Top of the Seventh
The Hawkeyes scored twice in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 5-0. Dan Potemba singled with a runner on third to score one run before the next batter brought him home with a double.
Bottom of the Seventh
Happ sent the first pitch of the inning over the left field fence for a solo homerun. It was the first hit and run of the day for Cincinnati.

The Bearcats and the Hawkeyes will complete their three-game series in Georgia on Sunday, March 1. The game is slated to begin at Noon and freshman Doug Lowe II (Marysville, Ohio/Triad) is projected to get the start for UC.
