CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team scored five runs in the sixth inning but the attempted comeback fell short as the team lost to Tulane 9-5 on Sunday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium.
The game was dedicated as the Vs. Cancer game for the Bearcats, who raised money all season for the Vs. Cancer Foundation. Prior to the game, a check was presented for $10,000 and the entire team shaved their heads in support of the organization following the contest. To learn more about the Vs. // NOTABLES
- With the loss, Cincinnati falls to 13-30 and 4-11 in the American Athletic Conference while Tulane improves to 27-16 and 8-7.
- Freshman starter Dalton Lehnen (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) (1-7) took the loss while Alex Massey (5-2) earned the victory and Ian Gibaut picked up the save for Tulane.
- Head coach Ty Neal penciled six freshmen into the starting lineup and has started at least four youngsters in each game this season. Freshmen Ryan Noda (Volo, Ill./Grant) and Manny Rodriguez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Calvert Hall) have started every game for UC.
- Junior Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt Lebanon) led the team with three hits, including a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
- J.T. Perez (Orrville, Ohio/Orrville) tossed a career-high five innings from the bullpen with a career-best three strikeouts. The freshman also made his debut in the Bearcats batting order and notched his first-career RBI.
- Rodriguez recorded his fifth multi-hit game of the season with a pair of singles.
- Noda notched two RBIs in the game with a hit and a run scored.
// KEY INNINGS
Top of the Third
Cincinnati struggled to get out of the third inning, sending three pitchers to the mound in the frame while giving up three hits and four runs. Lehnen recorded the first two outs of the inning before an error and a double put two runners on. He was lifted for freshman Tristan Hammans (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces Memorial) who allowed a 2-RBI single and a walk before making way for freshman Nick Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller). Voss gave up a walk and a 2-RBI single before Stephen Alemais recorded the third out trying to advance to second base. The final damage put Tulane ahead 6-0 after three innings.

Back-to-back bases loaded walks scored two more runs for the Green Wave for an 8-0 Tulane lead.
Bottom of the Sixth
Cincinnati's offense finally game alive in the sixth inning when the Bearcats scored five runs on three hits and capitalized on three walks and two hit batters. Happ got things started with a double off the wall in right center field that scored freshman Joey Thomas (Mason, Ohio/Mason) for the first UC run. Junior Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) was walked and Noda followed with a 2-run single to left center to get the Bearcats within 8-3. Junior Woody Wallace (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) was hit to load the bases and consecutive walks brought home two more Cincinnati runs. To cut the lead to 8-5.

Cincinnati heads to Tennessee for a three-game series against Memphis on May 1, 2 and 3. The Bearcats took two of three games from the Tigers April 10-12 when UM visited Marge Schott Stadium.
