Junior Monica Phillips broke the University of Cincinnati's women's hammer throw record to lead the Bearcats in a strong showing on the opening day of the 2015 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships After two event finals, the Bearcats' women's team sits fourth overall while the men are tied for third.

Junior Monica Phillips broke UC's hammer throw record and led a trio of throwers to top-eight finishes. Phillips finished second with a throw of 186' 6", and she broke Jo Young's previous mark of 183' 0", which was set back in 2005. Senior Frida Akerstrom entered the finals in ninth but moved up to fifth with a hurl of 180' 1". Senior Mekayla Breland rounded out UC's scoring with a toss of 173' 10".
// GOOD SITS ONE POINT OUT OF FIRST IN HEPTATHLON
Senior Kaitlyn Good had a career opening day in the heptathlon as she scored 3,119 points and sits one point out of first in the competition. The Vandalia, Ohio native recorded personal records in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.40 and also in the 200-meter run, clocking in at 25.97. Good heads into the final day of competition one point behind Lindsay Arnold of USF (3,120 points) with three events remaining. She will attempt to bring home the Bearcats' second conference heptathlon crown ever. (Jasmine Cotton, 2012)

Freshman Alex Bloom tallied four event personal records in the decathlon enroot to a career best day one point total of 3,569. The Seymour, Wisconsin native had personal records in the 100m (11.44), shot put (34' 3), high jump (6' 7.5") and 400m (52.26). Bloom enters the final day of the competition in seventh place.

Cincinnati continues its quest for the league titles on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. with the men's discus. The women's discus and the women's pole vault are the other field events contested. The final day of the combined events will also conclude. On the track, the preliminary rounds of the 800-meter run, 400-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash will start around 3 p.m.
