BLOOMINGTON - The University of Cincinnati Bearcats opened up fall play for the 2016-17 season at the Hoosier Classic with a strong team performance.
"For the first tournament I felt we were pretty sharp all three days, maybe a little better than I anticipated," head coach Eric Toth stated. "It was great to see Kelly competing again even though she really had to battle in her matches to earn a flight title today."
"Lauren's play stood out this weekend, as she picked up two really nice wins. I also thought Caroline and Anna were terrific in their collegiate debuts. Doubles was also a positive this weekend. Overall, a great start for our team that we hope to build on as our fall season continues."
Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) was crowned the winner of the second flight after three straight singles wins, in her first competition since suffering an injury last fall.
Caroline Morton (Dubuque, Iowa/Evert Tennis Academy) reached the finals of the third flight before falling to Eristavi of Western Michigan by a score of 6-4, 2-6, 10-6. Katya Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) finished second in the fifth flight with her only loss coming in the finals to Tshatedi of Liberty where she lost by a score of 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.
