Bearcats Come up Short Against Marshall

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team won the opening set in four singles matches, but couldn't finish off Marshall, eventually suffering a 6-1 non-conference loss Friday night inside the Western Tennis & Fitness Club.

The Bearcats played arguably the most competitive doubles match of the season Friday night. After Marshall picked up a win on the first court, Antonella Bramato (Pachuca, Mexico/Elise Freinet) and Harley Hutchison (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) picked up a 6-4 win on court No. 3.

All attention then turned to the second court where a duo of freshmen were battling. Anna Philp (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Central) and Caroline Morton (Dubuque, Iowa/Evert Tennis Academy) played a tight match, but came up just short in the tiebreaker.

The Bearcats started strong in singles play with first-set wins on four courts. The only opening frames UC dropped were to ITA ranked players on courts No. 1 and No. 3. However, Marshall fought back to win the second set on three of the four courts.

Meanwhile, Marshall wrapped up the second and third point and took a 3-0 lead with wins on the first and third courts, forcing the Bearcats to sweep the remaining singles matches for a chance at a win.

With three of the remaining four matches in the third set, Marshall was able to secure the win with a three-set victory on court No. 5. The Thundering Herd went on to win two of the remaining three matches to account for the 6-1 win. Philp picked up her team-leading fourth singles win to remain undefeated this season. The freshman has dropped just one set to open her career as a Bearcat.

Cincinnati will play a pair of matches next weekend, traveling to Wright State on Saturday, Feb. 11 before hosting Ball State on Sunday, Feb. 12. The match at Western Tennis & Fitness Club will start at 2 p.m.
