Tennis Tops Ball State 6-1 for Second Win of Weekend

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team earned its second win in as many days, picking up a 6-1 win over Ball State Sunday afternoon at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club.

The Bearcats set the tone early in doubles action, picking up a pair of wins on courts one and two. was halted on court No. 3 after the point was secured by the Bearcats. For the weekend, Bellinger and Poggensee-Wei went undefeated in doubles action.

Every singles match was closely contested Sunday afternoon, as each team battled for an edge. Antonella Bramato (Pachuca, Mexico/Elise ) and Caroline Morton (Dubuque, Iowa/Evert Tennis Academy) each did their part, securing first-set wins on courts No. 3 and 4 respectively. However, four other Bearcats each had setbacks in their opening frames. UC suffered opening-frame losses on courts No. 1, 2, 5 and 6.

Morton was the first to secure her match, recording a 6-2, 6-3 win, and giving the Bearcats a 2-0 lead. Bramato put the Bearcats one-point away from the victory after a win on court No. 3 by a 6-4, 6-3 score.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati showed resiliency on the other courts with all four Bearcats rebounding from an opening-frame loss with a win in the second set and forcing a third set.

Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) was the first to finish off her comeback, recording a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win against a spirited Ball State opponent. Her victory clinched the match for UC, leaving no room for a dramatic Ball State comeback.

Katya Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) added her win with a dominating 6-1 win in the third set on court No. 6. Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) was the final match to finish, and the senior finished off her comeback with 6-2 wins in the second and third set.

The Bearcats will play four-straight road matches next, traveling to Toledo and Michigan State next weekend before heading West for matches in Tucson, Arizona against New Mexico and Arizona on Feb. 24 and 25.
