Cincinnati Suffers 5-2 Set Back Against Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team saw their three-match winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to Michigan State on the road.

Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) extended their doubles winning streak to four matches with a win on court No. 1 by a 6-3 score. The duo is now 6-2 this season when pairing together.

Bellinger and Poggensee-Wei continued their strong day during singles action as the only two Bearcats to pick up a win. Bellinger defeated Erin Faulkner by tight scores of 7-6 and 7-5 to move her to 5-3 overall in singles action.

A fan of the comeback efforts lately, Poggensee-Wei recorded her third-straight victory after dropping the first set. She dropped the opening frame 6-4 before coming back to win the second set by a 6-3 score and force a thrid-set tiebreaker, where she picked up a 10-7 win.

"We just were not good enough in the middle and bottom of our lineup to make it interesting enough today and be in position to win," head coach Eric Toth stated of the loss. "Much of that is due to Michigan State's team. They are really good at all positions and were the better team today. Obviously, I'm very pleased with Lauren and Kelly's efforts today. They were outstanding."

The Bearcats will head west next weekend, facing off with New Mexico and Arizona on Friday and Saturday. Both matches will be played in Tuscon, Arizona.
