TicketsCINCINNATI - Over the weekend, the University of Cincinnati tennis team took part in the Viking Invitational at Cleveland State with the Bearcats once again posting some strong performances as the players faced competition from host CSU, West Virginia and Akron. Ioana Guna and Emma Miceli both posted perfect 3-0 records in singles play while Ellee Bullock and Maria Teixido Garcia both were undefeated at 2-0 in singles action as well. Guna also was impressive in doubles action as she was on the winning end of all three matches played, including one match each with Ali Miller, Caroline Morton and Antonella Bramato.
"It was another encouraging weekend all the way around for our team," Head Coach Eric Toth said. "All of the newcomers continue to impress and our veteran players continue to produce. I feel we have played enough quality matches in the last month to go to MTSU on Wednesday (ITA Ohio Valley Regional) and perform well. I'm really excited to see our group take on the Ohio Valley region's best."

Guna moved to 7-2 overall on the year as she swept her weekend of singles play. After a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Gaby Schoenberg (CSU), Guna dropped the first set of her second match to Carli Knezevich (UA), 5-7, before taking both the second set, 6-1, and the tie-breaker, 10-3. She closed out the weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Christina Jordan (WVU).
Miceli was equally impressive as she not only won all three matches played, she also did not drop a set as improved to 7-1 on the year. She first downed Jane Schober (CS), 6-2, 6-4, before getting past Luisa Echeverry (UA), 6-1, 7-5. Her final match of the weekend saw her record a 6-4, 7-5 win over Lyn Yuen Choo (WVU).
Bullock and Teixido Garcia both played a pair of singles matches and both came out with a pair of wins. Teixia Garcia easily won both of her matches as she took down Yvon Martinez (WVU), 6-3, 6-3, to open the weekend before grabbing a 6-0, 6-1 win over Abigail Rosiello (WV) on day later. Bullock started off with a quick win as she downed Rosiello in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, before battling back to defeat Kirsten White (WVU), 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Two other Bearcats captured two wins on the weekend in singles play, including Alexia Coutino and Anna Philp. Coutino opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Aleksandra Golawska (CS) before downing Rita Pedroso (UA), 6-0, 6-3. In the third match, however, Coutino fell to Giovanna Caputo (WV), 3-6, 6-4, 10-7, to lose for the first time in 2017 (8-1 overall). Philp, who is now 6-2 on the year, also won her first two matches of the weekend, a 6-2, 6-1 win over Blanche Lenoan (CS) and a 6-2, 7-5 win over Carla Flores (AU), before she fell to Paula Goetz (WV), 6-1, 6-3.

Guna once again led the way in doubles as she teamed with three different partners to collect three wins. Guna and Miller won the opener, 6-1, over the UA team of Pedroso/Knezevich before Guna and Morton took a 6-3 win over WVU's Duran/Jordan. On the final day, Guna and Antonella Bramato teamed up for a 6-1 win over UA's Wolfe/Uljanov duo.
Miceli also fared well in doubles action as she posted a 2-1 record on the weekend with a trio partners as well. In the opener, she teamed with Morton for a 6-0 victory over Wolfe/Uljanov before Miceli and Philp grabbed a 6-4 win over Coureau/Caputo of WVU. On the final day, Miceli and Coutino joined forces, but fell, 6-4, to the UA team of Pedroso/Knezevich.

The Bearcats will travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., this week to compete in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship hosted by Middle Tennessee State October 12-16. The event, which will be one of 12 regional events held throughout the nation, will be a bracketed tournament with singles and doubles competitions. Draws for the event will be released later this week.
