Tennis Finds Solid Results at Hoosier Classic

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati tennis team competed in the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind., over the weekend with the Bearcats again posting solid results as they have now participated in a trio of fall events. The Classic, held Friday, September 29, through Sunday, October 1, featured three rounds of singles and four rounds of doubles among athletes representing UC, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and the host Hoosiers.   "It was another solid weekend for our squad in the early going," Head Coach Eric Toth said. "Our doubles continue to be a bright spot thus far. We still have a long way to go with our singles play and still have another level or more we'll need to reach in order to peak when we want to at the Regional in a couple of weeks. We'll look for more improvement this coming weekend at the Cleveland State event."   // SINGLES RECAP The singles matches were spread out over four flights, including the Crimson, Hoosiers, Indiana and Big Red flights with all 10 Bearcats saw action over the weekend with all but one playing three singles matches. Overall, freshmen Emma Miceli and Alexia Coutino and sophomore Anna Philp each recorded perfect 3-0 marks to lead the Bearcats throughout. Miceli won all three of her matches in the Hoosiers Flight, taking each of the matches in straight sets. Coutino split her time in two flights, posting a 2-0 mark in the Indiana Flight before moving up to the Hoosiers Flight for a 1-0 record. Philp, competing in the Big Red Flight, won all three of her matches, including two in straight sets.   Ioana Guna, who competed in the Hoosier Flight, posted a 2-1 overall record as she won her first two matches of the weekend before falling in the finale. Combined, the 10 Bearcats won 18 of their 29 matches played over the three days in singles.   // DOUBLES RECAP Miceli and Coutino also fared well in doubles action as each of their respective teams posted 3-1 records. In the two-flight event (Crimson and Hoosiers Flights), Miceli and Caroline Morton teamed to capture their final three matches of the weekend in the Crimson Flight after dropping a close 8-5 decision to the Indiana duo of Appel and Whalen. All told, Miceli and Morton won twice by 8-1 scores and added an 8-5 victory as well.   In the Hoosiers Flight, Coutino joined with Antonella Bramato to post a 3-1 record by winning their first two matches before splitting the final two. After wins of 8-4 and 8-3, the duo dropped a close 8-6 decision to IU's Jahren and McKamey before rebounding nicely to close the tournament with an 8-0 victory.   The team of Ioana Guna and Ali Miller went 2-1 on the weekend in the Crimson Flight as they won their fist two matches with scored of 8-5 and 8-6 before falling in the finale, 8-4.   // NEXT UP The Bearcats return to fall action this week as they travel to Cleveland State for the Viking Invitational Friday through Sunday. The event will be held at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in Cleveland.
