CINCINNATI - Vanessa Gilles, a member of the University of Cincinnati women's soccer program the past four years, was today named a CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree, earning placement on the third team. The selection from the College Sports Information Directors of America is her second honor this season after she was tabbed CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team one month prior.
The selection is the first national academic honor for the Ottawa, Ontario, native and only the second in the program's history after Christy Hoffman earned first-team distinction in 2001, the first year women's soccer was honored as its own sport instead of being part of the at-large pool. One of nine Bearcats to earn all-district honors in program history, Gilles carried a 3.970 GPA through her playing career and is slated to graduate with a degree in criminal justice in April.
This year, 33 women earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors with 30 of those student-athletes carrying a 3.90 GPA or better. Gilles is one of three members of the American Athletic Conference that were honored nationally joining Sydney Kingston of Memphis (second team) and Hannah Dauzat (Houston) on the lists.
Following her senior season, Gilles was named the 2017 American Athletic Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Along with sporting a 3.97 overall GPA, Gilles has posted four semesters with a perfect 4.00 GPA during her collegiate career. A two-time AAC All-Conference First Team honoree, Gilles recently played her final collegiate match, helping UC to four years of improved winning percentages, one of the top defenses in the league and a conference title in 2015. Her career saw her start and play 82 matches, the eighth-most in program history, as she anchored a defense that continued to improve each year, helping a program that allowed 37 goals prior to her arrival drop that total to 11 this year.
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America, a student-athlete had to be selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team in their respective districts. To be eligible for district honors, a student-athlete had to hold a 3.30 cumulative GPA, participated in at least 50 percent of his/her team's competitions during the season, been enrolled at the nominating institution at least one full calendar year and has to have reached an academic standing of sophomore or higher.
