CINCINNATI - Student-athletes at the University of Cincinnati continue to post high marks in the classroom as the Bearcats combined to post a cumulative 3.224 departmental grade-point average for the Fall 2017 semester, marking the 19th grading period in a row the department has boasted better than a 3.00 GPA.
"We take great pride in our student-athletes for continuing to achieve at a high level academically," Director of Athletics Mike Bohn said. "Our collective effort in the classroom and on the playing field represents our Class of the League vision and I salute the outstanding leadership of Dr. Luckey and his Student-Athlete Support Services team along with our coaches, campus partners and student-athletes."
While the Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) staff reports many of the teams posted improved marks, one of the biggest highlights was the department-record 50 Bearcats that earned TopCat honors, given each semester to a student-athlete that records a perfect 4.0 GPA.
In the fall, 66 percent (293 total) of all UC student-athletes recorded a 3.0 or better GPA to earn Bearcats Honor Roll recognition with 45 percent (198) holding a 3.4 or better GPA to be named to the Dean's List. To top that, 50 student-athletes posted perfect 4.0 GPAs to shatter the record of 37 recorded one year ago in the Fall 2016 semester. In fact, the 50 TopCats marks the fourth semester in a row and fifth in the last six that at least 30 Bearcats have scored perfect marks in the classroom.
As a whole, the department GPA of 3.224 marked the fourth grading period in a row that UC student-athletes have combined for a GPA at 3.2 or better and is just off the record of 3.253 that was recorded last Spring. This we preceded by four semesters in a row with at least a 3.1 GPA (Spring 2014 through Fall 2015). To reach that mark, 14 of UC's 17 teams recorded a 3.0 GPA or better, meaning at least 13 teams have done so each of the past seven semesters.
Eight of UC's teams also posted cumulative GPAs of 3.4 or better with six of those squads recording a 3.5 GPA or better. Leading the way for the department was women's golf, who posted the highest team GPA at 3.718 while the men's golf team held the top men's GPA at 3.676, which was a program-record GPA for the third semester in a row. The men's basketball team also had a solid semester in the classroom as they joined the men's golf team in recording their highest team GPA all-time.
Of special note, 57 members of the UC cheer and dance squads earned 3.0 or better semester GPAs. Of the 57, 40 were on the university Dean's List and 9 achieved perfect 4.0 GPAs.
"Excellence is not just a term on a wall for us; our student-athletes, coaches and staff live it on a daily basis and it shows each semester," Luckey said.
