CINCINNATI - The American Athletic Conference has announced its weekly award winners for track & field with University of Cincinnati senior Annette Echikunwoke earning the AAC Female Field Athlete of Week honor for the second time this season. Echikunwoke, who had a monster meet in the weight throw at the Indiana Relays last weekend, first earned a weekly accolade from the AAC following her successful season debut at the Hoosier Open in December.
// ECHIKUNWOKE IMPROVES RECORDS
At the Indiana Relays, Echikunwoke put together an impressive series with her three biggest throws coming on her last three attempts. After moving to the finals with a best of 22.43m, Echikunwoke went deep with her second, third and fourth throws over 23 meters of the year. She first opened with a mark of 23.66m to break her own school and conference record while moving up to #5 all-time in NCAA history. After a toss of 23.47m, she closed the meet with another improvement, this time to 23.69m (77-08.75), the longest throw in the NCAA since 2012. Compared to the rest of the results from around the nation (all divisions), Echikunwoke recorded the #1, #2, #3 and #6 marks of the past week.
// MORE ON HISTORY
Not only is Echikunwoke sitting in the #5 position all-time in NCAA history, her marks this past weekend made her just the second woman to record multiple marks of 23.00m or better in a career. She joins Brittany Riley (Southern Illinois) in that group after Riley recorded the #1 through #9 marks in her career (2007 and 2008 seasons). This past weekend, Echikunwoke's throws not only ranked highly for the week, but also all-time as she now holds the #13 (23.69m), #14 (23.66m) and #16 (23.47m) throws ever, adding to her 23.15m mark from earlier this year that is now ranked #18 all-time.
