CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics recently held its yearly international student-athlete event inside the Richard E. Lindner Center as over 50 international Bearcats participated in both a panel discussion and the annual International Student-Athlete Extravaganza on January 22. The events provided a platform for members of the athletics community to learn more about its international members and the diversity they bring to the University community.
First, the Department of Athletics' One Team Diversity and Inclusion Committee, as part of its ongoing commitment to diversity, hosted a panel discussion entitled 'Coming to America'. The panel discussion was part of an ongoing series in which the Department hosts a panel twice per year for staff, coaches, student-athletes and the university community. The panel members consisted of six international student-athletes from six different sports, including football, men's swimming & diving, men's track & field, women's track & field and volleyball. Those six student-athletes also represented six different countries as well, including Australia, Canada, the Democratic Republic of Congo, France, Germany and Switzerland.
The goal of the panel discussion was to afford the international student-athletes their own platform to share their personal narratives, including information about their home country and culture, family life and experience moving to the United States to attend the University of Cincinnati as a student-athlete. The student-athletes reflected on their international experiences and the impact they have on their academic, athletic and social lives.
Following the panel discussion, 51 international student-athletes hailing from 23 different countries were celebrated and recognized by Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS). The event allowed the international student-athletes to share information about their country, meet other international student-athletes from different teams and some were even able to bring a signature dish from their country for everyone to enjoy.
The newest student-athletes on campus were welcomed as they introduced themselves and added their headshot to the map with all the other international student-athletes. Enna Selmanovic (Canada), a member of the women's swimming & diving program, served as the emcee of the event that saw staff and coaches from the Department of Athletics join with members of campus' International Services staff to meet and show their support for all the student-athletes in attendance.
