LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati track & field team battled the elements in Lexington, Ky., Saturday as the Bearcats competed in the 2018 Kentucky Relays, their final meet of the regular season before moving into the championship portion of the schedule next week. With rain falling for much of the day, the Bearcats competed well and turned in 13 personal-best marks with three of those being added to the program's all-time Top 10 ledger, including Alexis Anton in the 1,500m and Rachel Coghill in the pole vault for the women and Sam Meece in the discus for the men. Overall, the Bearcats found a way to claim six victories on the day with the men and women each collecting three of those gold medals.
// ANTON FASHIONING RECORD BOOK REDESIGNS
For a runner that continues to make a living as an 800m run, Anton has continued to round into quite a 1,500m runner as she posted yet another fast time in the metric mile today as she raced to a time of 4:33.63 to finish fourth overall despite a steady rain falling upon the track. Anton moved up the program's all-time Top 10 chart, rising to #3 overall as just the fifth UC woman to run under 4:37 in a race in program history as she dropped 4.43 seconds off her PR of 4:38.06, which was the #7 time in program history. Anton was not finished on the day as she raced to a time of 2:12.63 in the 800m run to win the event. Through today's races in Kentucky, Anton is now ranked #7 in the AAC in the 1,500m run and #6 in the 800m.
// CLIMBING THE (COG)HILL
While the show went on outdoors in the rain for most events, the pole vault and high jump competitions were moved indoors and held at the Nutter Indoor Facility, a place UC is familiar with having competed there during the indoor season. In the women's pole vault, Brooke Catherine and Coghill went 2-3 in the standings with Coghill adding to that result as she cleared a PR of 3.87m (12-08.25), a mark that added her to the program's all-time Top 10 list for the first time in her career, placing her eighth overall. The sophomore not only moved up into the UC Top 10, but also climbed higher in the AAC standings as she is now tied for fifth overall heading into the conference meet next week in Cincinnati.
// THROW IT AGAIN, SAM
In what seemingly has become a standard entry into a results recap this outdoor season, Meece has once again recorded a personal best in a throwing event, this time improving his best in the hammer with a heave of 54.84m (179-11). That mark keeps him at the #7 position all-time in program history while improving his UC freshman record for the second time as he added 1'11" to season-best mark.
// TOP OF THE PODIUM
Anton was not the only member of the program that earned a victory on the day as UC was credited with five more wins, including three by the men and two more from the women. On the women's side, the team of Haisha Bisiolu, Tiona Lattimore, Deanna Gesicki and Sylvana Ross ran a season-best time of 3:42.46 to capture the 4x400m relay while Loretta Blaut won the high jump as she topped 1.80m (5-10.75) for the win. On the men's side, wins were secured by Connor Duricky (110m hurdles), Nicholas Lauria (pole vault) and Marcus Abraham (shot put). Duricky, who recorded a PR in the 400m hurdles by running 54.58, led a 1-2 finish in the high hurdles event as he won in 14.55 while fellow rookie Isaiah McCall ran 14.94 to place second. Lauria won the pole vault with a best of 4.70m (15-05.00) while Abraham took the shot put with a heave of 16.46m (54-00.00).
// BIG IMPROVEMENTS
Along with Anton's huge PR in the 1,500m, two other Bearcats posted vast improvements on the track, including a teammate in the same 1,500m event. In the second heat of the women's 1,500m, Cassidy Carey took the lead from the start of the race and led wire-to-wire before finishing eighth overall in 4:47.01. That time, her first mark in the event this year, improved her PR by 3.12 seconds. Later in the day, Logan Baker raced in the men's 800m run and turned in a time of 1:56.68 to place eighth overall. Not only was it the first time this year Baker had run under two minutes, it lowered his PR by 5.67 seconds (2:02.35).
