CINCINNATI - The NCAA today announced its annual Public Recognition Awards with two University of Cincinnati athletic programs being honored, including the Bearcats tennis and volleyball squads. Utilizing the most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate (2016-17), both teams carried APR scores that rank among the Top 10 percent of their respective sports.

This year, according to the NCAA, more than 1,200 teams from 312 Division I institutions were recognized for academic excellence after scoring in the Top 10 percent of their sports. Both Bearcats teams are among the record-1,284 programs honored this year with 827 competing in women's sports and 457 in men's or mixed sports. Programs in the Top 10 percent held APR scores ranging from 985 to a perfect 1,000 with both UC sides posting perfect marks. The full listing of APR scores will be released by the NCAA May 23.

Tennis, led by head coach Eric Toth, was honored for the fifth year in a row, the longest stretch in UC history and the most honors of any UC team (women's cross country and men's track & field each have been honored three times in the past). The current streak for the tennis squad started with the 2012-13 honors and has continued through this year. Also being honored is the volleyball team. Under the guidance of Molly Alvey, the Bearcats earned their second all-time recognition award from the NCAA and their second in a row after being selected for their first accolade last year.

With tennis and volleyball being honored, UC has now had at least one team recognized by the NCAA in each of the last eight years, starting with the men's basketball team for the 2009-10 academic year. The two teams honored also gives UC at least two recognition awards for the fifth year in a row as tennis was joined by women's cross country in 2012-13; women's golf, men's swimming & diving and men's track & field in 2013-14; men's soccer and men's track & field in 2014-15; and men's track & field and volleyball last year.

Implemented in 2003 as part of an ambitious academic reform effort in Division I, the Academic Progress Rate (APR) holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.
