CINCINNATI – Eight University of Cincinnati football student-athletes were named to the 2018 Athlon Sports Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team, the publication announced Monday.
DL Marquise Copeland (Cleveland, Ohio/Bedford) and P James Smith (Wangaratta, Australia/Galen College) were tabbed as first-team selections, DL Cortez Broughton (Warner Robins, Georgia/Veterans), KR Michael Warren II (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) and LB Perry Young (Birmingham, Alabama/Spain Park) earned slots on the second team, RB Gerrid Doaks (Indianapolis, Indiana/Lawrence Central) was a third-team pick and DL Kevin Mouhon (Norcross, Georgia/Norcross) and WR Kahlil Lewis (Miami, Florida/Mirimar) were placed on the fourth team.
Copeland earned Honorable Mention All-AAC accolades a year ago. He was a 12-game starter at defensive tackle, setting career highs with 63 tackles, 8.0 tackles for a loss and a team-high 3.5 sacks. He set a career high with 10 tackles and a QB hurry against UConn in the season finale.
Smith, a First-Team All-AAC selection as a true freshman, kicked 64 times for a 42.0 per kick average with a long boot of 65 yards in 2017. He had 33 punts fair caught, dropped 21 inside the 20-yard line and booted nine kicks for 50 or more yards. The Bearcats led the league in punting, with a net average of 41.0 yards per punt. UC was one of four teams nationally to not have a touchback on a punt in 2017.
Broughton started 12 games opposite Copeland on the defensive line, and ranked among UC's Top-10 tacklers with 23 total stops. He also added 3.5 tackles for a loss, five QB hurries, a fumble recovery and a sack. He posted his best game of the year in the finale against UConn, racking up six tackles, a TFL and a QB hurry.
Young was all over the field in 2017, finishing second on the squad with 101 tackles. He hit for double-digit stops five times, including a career-best 17 tackles in the season opener against Austin Peay. He also had 9.0 tackles for a loss, three pass break ups along with a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Warren, also the Bearcats backup running back, had a strong freshman campaign in 2017, seeing action in all 12 games on special teams and in the offensive backfield. He totaled 20 returns on the season, averaging 23.1 yards per take back. Warren set a career best with his 41-yard scamper against Temple, the Bearcats longest return of the season.
Doaks led the team in rushing despite missing three games due to injury. He averaged 5.9 yards per carry, toting the ball 87 times for 513 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He rushed for 70 or more yards three times and broke out with 149 yards on 17 carries at Tulane. His 57-yard rush at Tulane, was UC's longest running play from scrimmage a year ago. Doaks also hauled in 14 passes out of the backfield for 135 yards and a TD.
Lewis is UC's leading returning receiver from a year ago. He caught 61 balls, nearly triple the number of anyone else in UC's receiving corps, for 676 yards and seven TDs. He had seven games with five or more receptions and caught a career-high 10 balls against SMU.
Mouhon made 12 starts at rush end a year ago and finished as UC's sixth-best tackler with 56 stops. His 3.5 sacks led the squad and he also racked up 8.0 tackles for a loss along with a pair of QB hurries, two passes defended and a forced fumble. Mouhon tallied six or more tackles in seven games, including a career-best 10 stops against SMU.
