CINCINNATI - The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) recently announced the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District honorees for men's and women's track & field with University of Cincinnati graduate Adrian Valles once again being honored. One of the most decorated Bearcats in program history both in competition and academically, Valles earned first-team accolades for the third year in a row and is now on the ballot for Google Cloud Academic All-America consideration.
Since 2012, Valles is the fourth UC track & field/cross country man to be honored and the only multiple-time honoree with Brian Barney (2015), Matt Bova (2013) and Eric Finan (2012) also being honored previously. Last year, Juliana Madzia was honored for the women, making her just the second female honoree for UC after Mackenzie Fields was selected in 2013. Both Valles and Madzia went to earn Academic All-America First Team honors in 2017.
Valles, who was hampered by an injury during the outdoor season, recently saw his collegiate career come to a close. During his time in Clifton, Valles went undefeated in American Athletic Conference competitions, winning the pole vault crown in all seven meets he entered, including all four indoor meets and three outdoor championships (he was unable to compete at the outdoor meet this year). Valles also competed in the NCAA Championships seven times and captured USTFCCCA All-America First Team honors six times, tying him with UC great Al Lanier for the most All-America honors in program history.
Academically, Valles was one of the best around as well. Not only is this year's honor his third in a row, but he also followed up each of the past two years being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America lists, including a first-team selection last year after being named second-team previously. At both the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships, the Spanish national was selected as the NCAA Elite 90 Award winner, an honor given to the student-athlete that holds the highest GPA of all competitors at each of the 90 NCAA championship sites each year.
A two-time competitor for Spain at the IAAF World Championships, including last summer in London, Valles graduated from UC in April 2017 with a degree in Industrial Management and will complete his Master's work later this summer.
