CINCINNATI - Former World Series Champion Kevin Youkilis and track & field All-Americans Alex Bloom and Adrian Valles headline a list of 16 Bearcats student-athletes that will graduate from the University of Cincinnati this week at UC's Summer 2018 Commencement Ceremony. Nine men and seven women will be among the 2,047 graduates that will be honored Friday at 2 p.m. inside BB&T Arena on the Northern Kentucky University campus with five of those Bearcats earning graduate degrees.
Youkilis, a three-time Major League Baseball All-Star and member of the 2004 and 2007 world champion Boston Red Sox, recently finished his degree work in Business Administration. He will join Connor McVey (Master's in Accounting) as the two Bearcats baseball players earning degrees this week.
The track & field program leads the way this summer with half of the graduating Bearcats, including five men and three women. Earning degrees for the men are Bloom (Health Education), a 2018 USTFCCCA All-America Second Team honoree indoors in the heptathlon; Valles (Master's in Business Analytics), a six-time All-American and seven-time AAC champion in the pole vault; Kelvin Williams (Sport Administration) and Halen Witcher (health education). The women's graduates include Leah Heckaman (Health Education), Sylvana Ross (Biological Sciences) and Ashley Williams (interdisciplinary).
Women's swimming & diving is the fourth team to have multiple graduates this summer with Sara Wanasek (Business Analytics) and Samantha Wheatley (Master's in Marketing) each earning their degrees. Four other programs have one graduate each, including men's basketball player Jackson Bart (Sport Administration); women's basketball player Brianna Moore (Communication); football player Evan Mallory (Operations Management); and women's soccer player Katy Couperus (Master's in Sport Administration).
All told, 98 Bearcats earned their degrees from UC during the 2017-18 academic year. Along with the 16 graduates this summer, 12 Bearcats graduated in the Fall with 70 more earning their degrees this past Spring. In the past six academic years (2012-13 through 2017-18), 547 Bearcats have earned their degrees with an average of 91 student-athletes graduating each year. After seeing an average of nearly 86 degrees attained in the first three years, that average has jumped to 96.7 degrees for the past three years (97, 95, 98).
