UC (1-6) dropped a 2-0 decision to the West Virginia Mountaineers on Tuesday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. After an even opening period, the Bearcats caught some bad luck early in the second half when sophomore goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md./Sacred Heart) mishandled the ball in front of the net off of a corner kick during the 52nd minute which led to the first score of the match. With the Red & Black searching for the equalizer, it was dealt another blow in the 71st minute when the Mountaineers added another goal. In the end, the Red & Black couldn't recover from the two second-period scores as it dropped a 2-0 decision.
// SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (4-2-2) is unbeaten in its last three matches with, most recently, a 1-1 draw at UAB on Tuesday. Three Tigers have scored team bests of three goals on the year: Peyton McKnatt, David Zalzman, and Chris Mikus. McKnatt and Mikus both have game winners with McKnatt also registering an assist. Between the pipes, goalkeeper Tyler Hofmann has tallied 20 saves and two shutouts. In the preseason, Memphis was picked to finish last in the AAC with Ben Roberts and Zalzman both selected to the Preseason All-AAC Team.

The Bearcats lead the all-time series, 14-12-1, and are 7-6 in matches played in Memphis. With four-consecutive wins in the Birthplace of Rock 'n Roll, UC most recently came away with a 2-1 road victory in 2016. Daniel Oginni (Mississauga, Ontario/King's Christian Collegiate) scored a goal in the triumph. In the last overall meeting, the Bearcats were edged, 3-1, at Gettler Stadium in 2017.

Sophomore newcomer Moritz Schaller (Austria/Vienna University) was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 3 after leading the Bearcats to their first win of the season on Aug. 31 – a 2-0 win at Cleveland State. In the victory, he scored the game winner in the seventh minute. Schaller totaled two shots in his first-career start.

Head coach Hylton Dayes enters his 18th season at the helm of the program in 2018. The dean of UC's varsity coaches and the all-time winningest coach in Bearcats men's soccer history, Dayes has won 132 matches in Clifton, reaching the NCAA Tournament twice (2003 & 2006). In 28 seasons as a collegiate head coach, including time as both the men's and women's head coach at Wright State, Dayes is 230-235-62.

The American Athletic Conference announced on Aug. 14 its preseason all-conference team with redshirt junior Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford) one of 13 players selected to the squad. UC has now had a player named to the preseason all-conference team in consecutive years after Patrick Nielsen was a unanimous pick in 2017, while also being tabbed preseason Defensive Player of the Year. In the preseason conference poll, the Bearcats were picked to finish seventh in the eight-team league.
